I wanted to see what would happen if I built a Windrider Bee capable of 200MPH. I'm not sure it will go that fast but didn't want the build to hold it back.
4 layers of 3M 8959
Carbon Sub TE spar
Standard Tube Spar with steel rod insert
Leading edge I-Beam config carbon rods
5 cell AA pack
Standard Hitec Digital servos moved out to 9.5" from CL
Full TE w 4" fixed inboard and out.
Spruce and balsa winglets
NO Laminate Film!!.
NO glassed or carbon elevons.
CG has been tested at the usual 8-1/2" but it's much more stable at 8-1/4". Inverted flight is still good but I'm going to have to do some tweaking.
Speeds: Maiden 166MPH at Weldon.
UPDATE: 2/19/13 - Got the Bee up to 190 at Weldon in winds 30-42. Really felt good just when I was about to rip off the fixed trailing edges and start over.
UPDATE: 5/26/13 - I broke 200 at Weldon in really smooth winds 30-50mph.
Final speed was 204mph. Really happy with the performance of the Bee. Pretty cool to do a punch-out to speck altitude in about 5 seconds.
The general consensus is I need to bag the elevons if I want to go any faster, they are quite flexible even cut down and covered with strapping tape.
