Question
I will be moving, what is best way to pack foam planes?
I am moving from Hawaii to Arizona and will have to have my foam planes mailed to my new location. What is the best way to package them to avoid damage? Was considering buying plasic containers, however, they are not that strong. Any ideas on moving foam rc planes would be highly appreciated. A moving company will be shipping them.
Thank you in advance. |

A good moving company should be able to advise, and supply, suitable packaging if you don't have the manufacturer's originals. Personally I would suggest boxes large enough to fit the components with, say, 3" to spare all round, then fill with foam "peanuts" all around the model.

I just talked to 2 different movers about my planes and our upcoming move. They want them de-winged and prop removed. They wiil pad the bottom of a tall box, stand them nose down and then surround them with packing paper. The guy was just amazed when he saw the. I guess a lot of folks have no idea what RC planes are, they think of them as the toys they see at Toys R Us.
Don Ps My wife wants me to rent a trailer and take them with us, not in the movers van. |

I shipped a few planes years ago and got mixed results. The boxes were stuffed with padding, but one of the planes I sent got all smashed up in transit(granted they were balsa planes). It is essential that there be rigid support around the planes to ensure that they don't get wrecked.

First things first. All of your belongings will go into very large wooden crates for the journey to the mainland, not in a trailer. Although you could buy a trailer and have it shipped to the states,er mainland.

I've moved too many times to count. (military) I'd give away my planes that you don't want to friends and the one or two you still love too much, I'd get rubber maid boxes and pack them yourself. Make it light so they will go on top of the shipping container. And even better, if the rubber maid boxes can fit in something strong like an entertainment center, even better.

It might be better to remove all equipment, give away the foamy airplane and buy a new one (shipped directly from hobby shop to your AZ location). Otherwise the suggestion below is probably the best: Quote:

Depending on the size of the plane(stab) you may bea ble to fit them into a Fedex golf club box on the diagonal. I generally make 3/4" foam board custom cut saddles for everything. I have shipped numerous planes and helis using this method, and no damage. I also use a method similar for shipping amateur radio equipment. Good luck on your across the pond move. Roy
