SNAP!
I flew my Windbag at the Cowra Oily Hand diesel fly in and did much the same thing.
I think it was about the 8th flight of the Windbag, but since I had a large audience I decided to embarras myself.
Launched on low rates by mistake, first turn and I over-cooked the roll and didn't have enough elevator to retrieve the situation.
Resulting pancake stove in the lower 1/3.
But I carefully collected all the sticks.
After a week or two waiting on the bench, it actually only took 1/2 hour to get the structure back together.
Now just needs a bit of covering so it will fly again!

I've been thinking maybe a gyro?

INstead of mounting all the electrics on balsa frames and platforms, how about a large block of foam? Sacrilege I know, but just a thought........

Long while since I could, but I'd go for FF and a small diesel here. As long as you fly on calm days, this way-out windbag is fun to watch.

Easy check-ride - set trims, power up, launch and pretend it's FF. Just use trims if needed to score a gentle turn, throttle stick as a motor timer. After all, FF models would be much happier if the engine cut as the model lined up into wind.

Good luck, great models

Thanks, all for the suggestions. I'll give this thing another try with strengthened structure. Got the covering stripped off and found the damage was more extensive than I'd thought. Glued in some heavier crosspieces and added some internal sheeting to support the radio gear. Also added a third servo for rudder control. She's almost ready to cover.

Tell me I'm mistaken and that's not a vegimite jar in the background of the second picture?

Good eye, raglafart. So, my dirty little secret is out! My wife and I have a running battle over this: "Say, Hon, where's my jar of Vegemite?" "I threw it out, that stuff is disgusting." Uh, Hon, it's SUPPOSED to be disgusting." "I don't care, keep that **** out of my refrigerator."

Everyone is entitled to at least one dark secret Pete. Being a Brit mine isn't Vegemite, it's Marmite, but fortunately my wife is an addict too, so I CAN keep it in the kitchen!

I'm going through a FF build stage at present and have just built a Charybidis, Flying Washboard and restored my 20 year old scramble model.
The Martian or Flying Windbag is next on the list.
Really enjoyed following this thread.
Now reading these pages with a nice hot cup of tea and some Vegimite toast or as we use these days Promite it's just about as good as it gets

Saw a Windbag flying at Middle Wallop the other week; it had a Dart motor. They seem to go well!

Dang, it seems I'm the only one who can't get one of these to fly!

Raglafart, you built a Charybdis? The whirly maple-seed thing? We'd like to see a build log on that.

So what has the rebuild done to the AUW ? It seems like the big flying problem is roll stability - a simple gyro would fix that.

I had considered a small version of the Windbag with the AS3X board and a 2S brushless system. Weight would have to be only a few ounces. What do you think, would that work?
