F3F at Vincent Hill--June 23

JUNE 23 -June 23-- SCSR will hold the first desert race of the year at Vincent Hill, a bit north of Parker and south of Palmdale, overlooking hwy 14 and Pearblossom Highway. When the desert north heats up, it sucks big wind up and over this slope which sits square across the valley. Many people have set personal bests here over the years, and when it's good, it's really good.

I would like to get an early start and so ask that fliers arrive by 10 AM so we can set up, do the pilots' meeting and get going. i will keep an eye on the weather forecasts for any last minute modifications, but this is a good target to plan on.

The dirt road up to the peak (cell tower) is a piece of cake for any vehicle, but to actually drive down to the site will require real 4 WD and good tires. There will be vehicles enough to get folks down, IF you are on time. Otherwise it is a 1/4 mile hike from the cell tower.

So sign up, charge up, ballast up and get up to Vincent.

Thanks to the PGR Slope Information Pages, here is the scoop:

WSW winds work best. NE winds also work on back side.

National Weather Service Area Discussion National Weather Service Zone Forecast

National Weather Service Graphical Forecast Map

Flying site is on a ridge with steep slopes on both sides. Good front-side flying in SW wind. Decent front-side flying in E wind. Good DS in both directions.

Starting point: Junction of I-5 and the Antelope Valley Fwy. (SR-14): Go N on SR-14 30.4 mi. to Angeles Forest Hwy. and turn RIGHT. Go over the bridge at the end of the off ramp and drive S. on Angeles Forest Hwy. for 1.4 mi. to E. Soledad Pass Rd. (dirt) and turn LEFT. Go 0.1 mi. E. on Soledad Pass Rd. and turn LEFT on the small dirt road. That road will wind it's way N. along the Angeles Forest Hwy. for about 0.7 mi. and then head E. up the hill. Follow the most-traveled route up the hill about 1.3 mi. to where you drive between 2 huge power line towers. From this point on, turn LEFT at all main intersections until you can see the cellular towers to the North. That's where you want to go.

From the cell tower down, it's steep, rough, and loose. If you don't have a 4WD vehicle, park near the large cell tower and walk N. down the trail to the flying site. If you do have a 4WD vehicle, you still might want to park near the large cell tower, walk down, and check things out before you try to drive down there.

34.50913, -118.11116 Junction of SR-14 & Angeles Forest Hwy.
34.48887, -118.11590 Junction of Angeles Forest Hwy. & E. Soledad Pass Rd.
34.48804, -118.11414 LEFT turn off of E. Soledad Pass Rd. onto small dirt road.

34.49527, -118.11447 Dirt road heads east up hill.
34.50397, -118.10265 Large cell tower (parking).
34.50642, -118.10441 Flying site.

Acton forecast says 75 degrees and SW wind at 12 for next weekend, and this is pretty consistent with prior days.
