You can always use ANY free port or if none are free then use a Y harness.
If you have a DSMX receiver then YES you want to connect the telemetry in the DATA port in order to get FLIGHT LOG information on the telemetry.
If you are using a DSM2 receiver without a DATA port but instead it's labeled BATT/BND you can still use that port for telemetry but it's recommended to remove the signal wire from the data cable as it may cause issues when powering on the system. System MAY go into bind mode.
