30" 9mm EPP Boneyard 3 Finless Wing
Here is my latest wing using basically the BluCore WIng build with the following mods:
- use 9mm EPP - single sheet of 1000mm * 600mm - longer root chord - use a one piece bottom wing with two top halves - laminate wing for great strength - bicycle spoke control rods - aluminum bracket motor mount -1800kv motor with 7x6 prop - go finless AUW is 430g - including 50 grams dead weight. Servo wires are routed through hollow spaces inside wing. Also lots of room for internal leds. Mounted rx face down to protect wires. Am trimming it out now. It is light and very strong compared to my foam board builds. Don't think I will go back to foam board anytime soon. Maiden flight was not pretty - laterally out of balance by the battery and weights I used so sunk battery deeper into wing and turned sideways. Also, motor thrust line was too low so bent motor mount out a bit so thrust line is more in accord with chord line. Update 5/28: This wing flies great - even with some wing warp in it which I can iron out with the laminate. I had to remount battery sideways and put 2 ounces of weight on the battery. A 1300mah should be just about right. This wing is not indestructible but it is much much stronger than anything I have built with foam board. On the foam board wings the nose gets soft and wrinkly after a few hard nose ins. The EPP stays pretty stiff and if it does get damaged it tears rather than fractures and is easy to make strong again with hotglue - all interesting points attested to by many in this forum. The laminate does come loose sometimes at the seams but reiron or tape and its ok. Makes an interesting sound while flying. Probably less draggy with the laminate and it certainly flies less draggy without fins. Update 6/28: Flew this morning at 4am - beautiful sunrise reflecting off my plane. Flew 4 batteries (900mah) for about 35 minutes. Put about two ounces of deadweight up front. Great loops and rolls. Very happy with this plane and it even has a bit of wing warp still. 1800kv on it now I think. Very strong plane. Update 9/15: Bummer, was flying this wing a few weeks ago on campus with night lights and it got a little far away so I let it glide down. Me and several students then looked for two hours and no luck. Think someone picked it up and ran off with it as it must have landed in the square in front of the main building. My favorite wing because it didn't waggle. Will have to make a new one - about 5 hours work and sixty bucks in parts. Will move up the motor a couple inches and try to lose some of the ballast.
