UniqueModelRC.com PT-17 Stearman

This is a new plane...from a relatively new manufacturer...and one that is definitely worth checking out.

Defined as one of the most recognizable WWII trainers ever built, the PT-17 Stearman was designed originally as the Model 70 by Lloyd Stearman, the design was adopted by Boeing after it bought the Stearman Co. The "Kaydet" trained many of the aviators of WWII in their early days as pilots and soldiered on after WWII as popular recreational and agricultural aircraft.

Larger, more detailed, and priced right, this RC version from UniqueModelRC.com stands out well against competing mfgrs, including FMS (Banana Hobby), E-Flight, and others.

At this post date, the plane is available from easytigermodels.com.

I was actually persuaded to pull the trigger ($179 +$36 shipping) by Rich at rcinformer.com, who has published one of the best "build" videos I have ever seen.

Detailed Specifications.....

Having been mostly a Parkzone flyer for the last three years, I'm really looking forward to building, flying, and sharing comments on this bird!

Yes, an unknown entity to me, as is this plane, but both are recommended by Rich at rcinformer.com. He's a serious hobbyist and real pilot!

Plane Arrives...finally

Received yesterday and built in about 2 hours. No shipping damage, missing parts, or bad fits! A very nice build experience.

First flight report to follow.

This is comparatively little stress on the motor, Lipo and ESC, as this bird flys very well at 2/3 throttle. I am getting 14 mins on a 3s 2200 30c, even though the mfgr specs a 4s Lipo.

Nothing really wrong with EasyTiger, except if your not accustomed to longer time to ship. My order took 3 weeks, presumably during a restock.

But the plane arrived intact and as advertised!

Check the Mig 3 thread. Restock? What Stock? Three weeks is good.

Isn't Easy Tiger a 'drop shipment' operation, meaning that they actually don't carry a stock per se, just agent a sale for the manufacturer?

Evidently. But that was not apparent at the time of my original order.

I really have no complaints, as the plane arrived as advertised. That is worth the wait! I quite enjoy this plane, after flying mono-wing war birds.

Installed a PK 15-size outrunner, hoping for more power with a 3s 2200 Lipo.

An easy install, after drilling new holes for the PZ motor.

Static WOL pulls 30 amps, 10 more than stock. No surprise that flight time was about 1/3 less with Lipo pretty hot.

Going back to stock and trying a 4s Lipo.

Otherwise, the plane is holding up well. Approaching 50 flights.

Now flying with 2200 mAh 30c 4s Lipo's. Wow, what a difference! Much more powerful and almost the same flying time (~12 mins) as the 3s lipos.

For any of you considering the FMS or Eflite Stearman, you really should consider this plane. IMO, the greater size allows you to fly in more wx conditions, take off and land from GRASS, and enjoy RC flying again!

Did you put the stock motor back in when flying on 4s?

Yes I did. The PZ 15 size motor didn't seem to have as much power as the stock motor (using 3s). I am guessing that this would also be the case using the 4s.
