Wind, hill, ... I'm keen ...

This is a picture of Christchurch and the Banks Peninsula, showing the main sites. It's by no means complete or accurate - it's something I started playing with, and never finished, but it gives you an idea of what the area looks like and where the sites are in relation to each other. I'm sure Alex will have heaps of corrections and additions, but I thought it worth sticking this up anyway.

At least 3 of these sites have DS zones on both sides of the ridge: Wainui, Sugarloaf and Cass. Probably also Camerons Track, but it's not tried yet.

Tekapo is in a completely different area, on the flanks of the Alps, several hours drive south. I've shown Lake Forsythe ... that's not a DS ridge, but it's where they have the big annual "Fly In" weekend that Alex has posted about.

Just watched this video about the Hobbit, which was filmed all over New Zealand. What a beautiful country, that hasn't been destroyed by human expansion yet (give it time!).

What is interesting in this video is how the film maker built a permanent "Hobbiton" that will be used for tours. According to the video, it is located near Lake Tekapo! If I were to ever do a DS trip to NZ, I would surely want to visit both Tekapo and the real Hobbiton!

Here you go, near Matamata/Hamilton in the North Island.

Thanks Aaron ... loved it, just watched it with the kids ... that was great - I think I'm in love with NZ.

The Hobbiton farm is in the North Island, but Tekapo is in the lower South Island. Not sure what they said that was confusing there! But the filming uses locations all over both islands. Any of you guys going over there are going to see such beautiful scenery. Just looking west from Christchurch is beautiful Alps. The main DS sites around Christchurch all look down on the most amazing bays and harbours in the Banks Peninsula. Tekapo is right in the flanks of the southern Alps and you're looking across at Mt Cook when you're on the ridge! It really is all very beautiful. If you get a patch of days with no wind, you won't be bored. But then ... that's unlikely to happen!
