The iOS Issue

Hello Everyone,

Not so great news today: I applied for the MFI program from Apple to get access to the WiFi/Bluetooth API of the iOS. However I received the rejection notice today due to the limited quantity of the DC. Apple only works with bigger companies together that produce marginal amount of products (>500k/year). Without the access to the API, I can't implement the DragonCommander for iPhone/iPad.

What does that mean in regards of the future of the DragonCommander on iOS? Well there a few solutions available that might work:

1) I could implement a third-party wireless driver. This would mean that you need to jail-break your device and the app would be available through Cydia - not ideal but workable - probably the best solution at the moment if you need it now.

2) Wait a couple more months until CSR releases their Bluetooth 4.0 Chip which contains the BLE (Bluetooth Low Emission) protocol. Apple actually allows to use this protocol stack freely. However it only will work on devices with iOS 5.0 (and how it stands right now, only on iPhone 4GS, no iPad - reading confusing articles).

-or- the worst:

3) Only offer the DC for Android.

They are other solutions but all of them would supersede the cost of a DragonOSD by itself.

From the feedback I received here, the ratio seems to be 80%-20% (Android-iOS).

So let me know your opinion.

Thanks,

Andy

A real shame that apple are limiting some of the features to bigger companies etc.

Maybe a bit OTT but there are cheap android devices available second hand now that would suit the job fine apart from the fact you would need data for the mission editor.

Alternatively just buy an Android device where the manufacturers don;t control what you can and can't do!

(you may be able to tell I don't like Apple for some reason)
