This thread is EXACTLY what I've been looking for! I currently fly a DH 9116 and want desperately to go with a 450 size heli that will do a bit better in the constant winds we get here in Colorado. I've already ordered a TX, a Turnigy 9x from HK. Hopefully this is a decent enough radio, or maybe I should just cancel and go with the Dx6i that everyone seems to think is the best? I was pretty much set on the EXI 450 Pro CF kit from XHeli, but I keep reading how nice the Tarot is and now that Nascar1929 found one for only $67+shipping, I may go with it instead.

But in a nutshell , here is a parts list in USD

450 kit $11.26 [ Leader hobbies = Parts4Hobby on Ebay ]
Motor 3800KV $5.03
ESC $6.88
Gyro $10.01
Servo x4 $10 from Hobby King
Rotor Blades $3.67

$46.85 , under budget ($50) ... This is as cheap as I can build a 450 Heli [ less radio ] ... So far ....

I dont know if its possible to build for less than this ?

The goal was to spend as little as possible , to build the possibly cheapest 450 you can , less radio !
How cheap you can go , is some what geographical , I have to have everything posted to me [ lives in Oz ] , but Im trying .

So while others go for the TOP gear , I have set the bar as low as possible .
B*****y marvelous !! I applaud you ...

Now with all that dosh saved - you can now splash out on the best radio for it .... FlySky 9x all in for about $80 ~ or the Radiolink 6EHP for about $35 ... or the FlySky CT6b for about $30 .............

My Upforce 450 at under $200 as RTF ... was a bargain I thought ........ but you have shown the light !!

Turnigy 9x is good stuff .. Its the Tx Im using ATM to fly my Leader $9 kit , ( $21.50 shipped )

Plastic450-2.flv (1 min 43 sec)

Very nice Tx , not nearly as hard to set up as some would have you believe .

Simple Timer added to Transmitter (0 min 17 sec)

Turnigy 9x fitted with kitchen timer .. Up or down , count down = alarm at end ..

kbohip, I was flying a DH9104 and just sold it on Ebay to help fund my 450 build. Currently flying a Walkera Mini CP and a V120D02S with a Devo 8S.

I haven't received my kit yet. Just ordered it a few days ago. Can't wait for it to get here!

I was just about to click on the buy button on that EXI 450 Pro belt version when I decided to look around one more time. That's when I came across that Tarot 450 Pro belt!

I hear a lot of good things about the EXI kit, but also kept hearing that people eventually replaced things on it with Tarot or Align products that were sloppy or wore out too fast. I figured for $2 less than the EXI kit, I would hopefully have a good head start with my build having all Tarot quality parts to begin with.

Once I get my kit, I don't know if I'll know what I'm looking at and probably wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between the Tarot and EXI since this is my first big heli. At least based on everyone else's experience, I know I'm getting almost Align quality right off the bat and won't have to swap anything out right away. (I hope)

Good luck in your search and let us know what you decide on.

^^^I ended up ordering a lot of the parts for my new 450 at Xheli a couple days ago when they were having a 12% off sale. Ended up going with the EXI 450 Belt version for $59.50. I read both good and bad things about the Tarot and the EXI and thought I might as well just go for the cheaper of the two. Here's what I bought from XHeli so far:

EXI 450 Pro Carbon Fiber 18H18-EXI450Pro-Belt 1 70.00

RC Tech 6 CH Flight 60P-DYU-1002-Simulator 1 17.95
Simulator Kit

Training Kit TrainingKit 1 6.00

Detrum GY48V HH 3D Gyro 60P-DY-1017 1 9.00

Solar Servo D650 33P-SolarServo-D650 3 9.50
0.11@4.8v Digital 11g

Solar Servo D658 0.1@4.8v 33P-SolarServo-D658 1 12.35
Mini Digital Metal Gear

Exceed-RC Brushless ESC Exceed-RC_ProgramingCard 1 7.95
Programmer Device for
Volcano Series &
HobbyWing Aircraft ESC

Exceed RC Proton/Volcano 07E05-Proton-40A 1 21.32
40A Brushless Electric
Motor Speed Controller

Got 12% off on all that. I'm getting the batteries and motor from HK today. Oh, and I burned out the second motor on my junky 9116 last night! I don't think I got more than 15 flights out of it tops. I ordered an Xtreme 180 Pro motor for it that I hope will last a lot longer.

I figured I would ask this in another post so it wouldn't get lost in the last. Has anyone here used the cheap sub $20 flight sim? When I ordered it I had visions of horrific graphics and controls. I just wonder if I threw the money away on it.

I have the same exact sim. A lot of people use the Phoenix simulator, but that was way out of my budget so went with the cheap one. It works well for me and is fun to use. Graphics are decent and the controls work well.

My brother has the Phoenix and has seen and used mine. He says the only differences are the graphics are better (a little more realistic), more heli's to choose from and the controls are a bit quicker.

When you get the sim, go to this website and install on your computer. You can use this sim with the controller you get and can choose a lot more heli's and a lot more options.

For me personally, a sim is helpful, but I don't see any reason to spend hundreds on a sim when all it does is help you learn basic controls for different types of flying. You'll see that the sim is helpful, but nothing like actually going out and flying the real thing.

Good for learning the controls [ sticks ]

Once you can fly the heli in the sim, moving onto something like a V911 micro , and when you begin to hot dog , ?

I recommend the KDS-450C:

RTF version with Flymentor:

RTF version without Flymentor:http://www.rc-fever.com/kds-450c-6ch...se-p-8298.html

ARF version without Flymentor:http://www.rc-fever.com/kds-450c-rc-...or-p-8183.html

I highly suggest you get Flymentor. If you are not sure what flymentor is, here is an article explaining it:

Best wishes!

So far, both my DH 9116 (the poor thing) and the V911 have been my "sims". The DH looks like it did 2 tours in Vietnam, went on to see more action in Afghanistan, and was then sold to a Mexican sightseeing tour group.

Parts replaced on it so far:

2 motors

2 mainboards, one from a crash, one just fried

1 servo on order, but I'm still flying it with the twitchy one

Canopy just got replaced as the old one has huge cracks/holes all over

Tail support bars didn't make it past the maiden flight and I've just left them off

Tail boom looks like a bomb went off near it as I bend it back to shape when necessary

Getting excited!!! I just checked the tracking on my 450 kit and it was processed through the sort facility in NY on May 31st. Should be here the middle of this week I hope!

Mine already came in yesterday. I've already made my first newbie mistake with it too! I got too much loctite on a couple of places on the head. I also over tightened the stabilizer bars. Tonight I'll fix it.

Haven't been able to make any purchases besides the airframe yet for my kit. I haven't even started loctiting it either. Been busy with work and home. I did meet up memorial day with some friends, one buddy said he had some 450 stuff he would give me. I was in for a surprise when I seen a nice Align 450 carrying case, and even more surprised when I seen a T-Rex frame inside the case
