In no way am I suggesting a compass is needed for this project, just sharing a find.

Rims,

What the purpose of this compass, replacing the switch to centre the antenna in the flight "window" and liberate the user from centring the antenna?

As stated, no real purpose but it would provide a cross reference. I noted your calculations in the code based upon the LAT/LON data received, it would be nice (In my head) to compare the results with the measure sensor output from the compass.

I am in the process of integrating a LCD to this project.

The atmel328 suffer to its passes to process also the LCD, but in contrary to what I believed it can do the task at the expense of some (few) corrupted package (and thus a more coarse movement of the antenna).

Now the main doubt, polish the software to include the LCD instructions or use a second arduino to process the LCD and liberate the main arduino to "run" the antenna only???

I like the idea of removing the need to manually do the centring ... if we can automate the task we just need to put the hardware in the ground, turn it on and launch the model.

I would say that it's better to have a second arduino, most people can afford the expense of a second arduino when they are 4 on ebay.

main problem, the compass needs at least 6000us to deliver a read

This could mess with the modem timings.

Good news, if we remove the serial.print instructions, the arduino is capable of processing the LCD without a problem (1000s without a mismatch).

I really do not know how fast the compass I have, the manual states bandwidth is 25 HZ but I would assume these devices can be poled verse waiting for a response. I believe they can also be set up to generate an interrupt when the data is ready for reading.

News:

Already have the LCD working.

So far indication of LAT, LON and ALT. But I can add more (distance, bearing, etc)

One arduino is capable of everything, without noticeable delay in the bench test.
