Any way to view what a Sony Nex-5 is seeing before the picture?

I'm new to this side of rc. Wondering if there is any way to view what is in the view finder of the camera before you take a picture? Do guys just put the camera in a mode to take a picture every five seconds? Does everyone use a blip switch? Is there a video camera out there you can use for your fpv and take good quality pictures at the same time? Been doing quite a bit of reading on the fpv-lab forum and haven't come across the answer yet. Found out this forum seems to have alot more info. I haven't got to all of it yet.

Thanks Much

Hi superdr, welcome to the forum

There're already quite a few threads on this topic, including one slightly further down on the first page:

If you want to see exactly what's on the screen of the camera you have two options – either buy a relatively inexpensive, but rather large HDMI to Composite converter, or point a small FPV camera at the screen itself. As far as I know most people have gone for the HDMI converter route, including myself. There are some photos of the most common converter in this thread:

The bare board weighs around 60g and it certainly does what it says it will on the tin ... then you just need an HDMI cable:

http://www.cinegearpro.com/hdmi-cabl...dmi-cable.html

are just two examples. Finally you need a composite video link such as any of those shown here:

Hope that helps get you started

Hi Guys,

We made a video in which we show how to install a Sony Nex 5R and a HDMI converter on a Gimbal. Hope it helps.

Hey there,

Did you successfully made the 5R to output video thru the hdmi2av?

Mine not working though. As explained here.

But my sis EOS M works thru the same converter

I had that same converter working fine on my 5R until I let the magic smoke out. New one on the way. But I can confirm it works for the 5R.

Just read your posts on the other site.
To clarify the NEX-5 needs the converter to be powered with 5 volts via its USB port.

To achieve this I ran a 5v uBEC from a free RX port to the converter and attached it with a Jr servo plug to USB adapter I made but cutting up a mini-b USB lead.
