So, which camera should I buy? Looking to start making videos of our trips to Mars. Any ideas? Budget maybe upwards of $1000.

Topic comes up from time to time

I've been happy with my Canon SX series long zoom cameras because they shoot both stills
and video and have dedicated priority shutter buttons for each (can shoot video at any time in any mode..
can shoot stills in the middle of shooting a video). The newest SX-40HS shoots 1080p video.
Can see an example of long zoom, 1080p, taking stills on the fly etc.. here
Canon PowerShot SX40 HS - Breitling Wing Walkers pt 2 Full HD (3 min 14 sec)

and also has a 240fps slow motion mode, but at a lower resolution.
For tracking fast planes with some zoom, I usually just install a sighting tube on the flash shoe.

Thanks Ian. I did read that you reccomended CCD sensors and I could not find a lower priced camera with one. Do they all cost $2000+?

hey joe its a Panasonic HDC-TM900. the most important thing in my opinion is having a good viewfinder. i found using andrews digital slr's viewfinder, which is an optical viewfinder, a lot easier than his camcorder which was digital, however, it was still quite easy when you zoom the same amount as the naked eye and sort of blend the two images together while opening both eyes. his has great video, and quick to record, fast focusing and awesome sound, but cannot go more than 60fps, which is an issue if you are looking to get slow mo (120fps or more). anyway i am sure alex made this thread to get away from the off topic chat in the other thread so we should take this elsewhere.

Ok, where should I take it? I have been in the market for a good camera for months. Would like to know my options for DS videos. I already have a Zoom H2n recorder. Just need a really good camera.

While over there at Weldon I got the opportunity to get some video of Alan Cocconi and Jason Lilly explaining and demonstrating Alan's telemetry/ stability system, and also hear some more from others such as Ian Frechette. I've cobbled it together ... sorry it's so long ... it's a bit piecemeal but there's some interesting stuff in here on the subject, so I hope some of you find it interesting.

Another video from the trip. Have another couple to do at some stage also. I didn't even get half the footage that Andrew got though. Looking forward to his videos!

I have heard alot about Bruces flying but you don't often see video of him. All I can say is WOW, Bruce has the energy management/acro thing going on!! He is one smooth operator!
