"Britkit" Build Off April 2012 - 31/12/2012

There seems to be some support for a Build Off to follow on from the modestly successful Frog one so this is what I propose:

Build Off to run from May 1st 2012 to December 31st 2012, giving 8 months total

Subject can be any design kitted by the following Brtitish kit producers:
Keil Kraft
Mercury
Veron
Skyleada
Performance Kits
Halfax
Airyda
Elite
MS Newcastle
Worcraft
.....and, after thinking about it, Frog. I can see no good reason to exclude them just because we have had a specific build off just finished, there are still lots of very good designs not yet done.
PLUS...any other minor British Kit manufacturer who were advertising and producing kits BEFORE December 31st 1960. i.e. NOT such as Westwings and other current producers, if any. NOTE however that designs first marketed by any of the above listed manufacturers AFTER 31/12/60 ARE eligible - for example KK Super 60. Hope that is clear.

Models can be built original size, scaled up or scaled down.

Models can be built as originally flown - F/F, C/L or radio - or converted to another style - i.e. F/F or C/L to radio, or vice-versa!

Models can be powered as originally, or by any other power source - glider (no power source), rubber, CO2, I.C (diesel, glow or ignition), electric, rocket or gas turbine!!!

In order to qualify for the poll at the end of the build off the model must be completed, but not necessarily flown. As a minimum a photo and description of the finished model must be posted on the Build Off thread, but if possible a Build Log thread for the model is much preferred, please try and do one if at all possible.

As with the Frog Build Off I will keep the first post of the thread up to date with entries, progress and build log links.

When you have decided to enter a model, please post the details on this thread, if there is to be a build log please also post the link to that here too, particularly if it is to be in another forum - free flight or scale for example -once you start it, I will pick up and list any started on this forum, but can't look at all the others. If you title the build log thread "(Model) - Britkit Build Off April 2012 - 31/12/2012)" that would be a help.

I'll start the ball rolling, build log to follow.

Ah,this is the incentive I need to (finally) get a Tomboy built.

Edit: "never mind".

Hi,
While the previous post is an obvious and excellent reaction, it puts George in a delicate situation... Until a few recent, laser cut short kits, the Tomboy was never a kit... only an Aeromodeller plan...
Oh dear George, I suppose it was foreseeable...
Wha ya gonna do now Yogi?

That's my Senator electrocution back in the 'pending' file, due to Raf_Bob's speed (he's probably got it half built by now ).

Need to have a long, hard think here. Must be something a little offbeat here.

Bob - you and I could have a similar old 'day job'?

I'll put my name down to do a KK Topper. Probably scaled up to 1.5 metres or so.

Er - sorry Raymond, as Brian said the Tomboy was never a "Britkit" pre 1960, just an Aeromodeller plan. There are, however, lots of alternatives; may I suggest the Davis Charlton "Ballerina" (I think Old School Aircraft Factory do a laser "short" kit, but to be honest it is such a straight forward design, who needs laser cutting?), also a Vic Smeed design, or the Veron Cardinal (see below for an electric R/C one), 36", lovely flyer, or it's big brother the Deacon if you would like something a bit larger. Lots of other options too if your fancy is for a cabin model - Mercury Magna, Halfax Hermes for example.

Sorry about that but I hope you will still enter with an alternative model.

!!! I Wish! Why not two Senators Dereck? Would be interesting to compare notes. However, With so many delicious designs to choose from, the variety possible is enticing isn't it? I'm not really quick off the mark. I'd already decided to do the Senator whilst building the Wren. It's just a matter of circumstances that it fits into the Britkit build off. Vega, the Topper is another favourite of mine. Really looking forward to your version. + Gipsy + whatever! My progress so far is to download the Senator plan and print it to the correct size.

Nothing wrong with two people doing the same model Dereck, in fact it is quite interesting to see how different builders tackle the same design (we had three Ravens in the Frog B/O, all different)

However, if you want to be individual there are stacks of interesting options, especially if a converted rubber model "park flyer" is what you are after. I have several in mind but won't list them here, if you want to know what they are, PM me.

The Topper - that brings back memories, I had one and it was a challenging build for a twelve year old! Great looking model though and I can't wait to see what you do with it.

Hi Bob
Snag I have is that most of my builds are not actually, well, planned. Okay, they're planned in that I have to draw the plan first, but that's no drama. I follow the words of the late, great Randy Randolph - 'All my models are the same. Just the size and shape vary'.

It makes sense if you think about it long enough.

I just had a Splendid Inspiration - cut short by finally noticing the word 'Kit'. My SI, which would have knocked a few into a sitting position, is unfortunately a plan by Ray Malmstrom, a British legend if ever there was.

Performance Kits? I seem to have 'lost' a PK plan that would have caused the odd palpitation at an OW meeting... Research is needed, I can't recall the name of the kit though I do recall the tailplane not being at the boring end.

Could get boring and build the not-old-enough-to-be-a-collectible-kit Veron SE5 I've lugged around for years and an ocean crossing, I suppose...

A snag around here is that whoever nicknamed Chicago the 'windy city' wasn't kidding. Small models either log a lot of shop time or are last seen heading downwind, RC or not

Amendment list one, as we said in the Olde Day Jobbe.

PK plan found. Nearly odd enough to wake Franny up... Needs upsizing, re Chicago wind and for ease of fitting that new-fangled 'RC Gear' stuff. Will be e-powered vice a Mills 75 (head bows in thought and respect for a moment).

Now, do I chance upsizing a wrinkly plan at Kinko's, or sit up all of several nights CAD-ifying it...

D
