motor choice 2.6m comp arf extra 260

I am pondering what motor to put in my compy.

I have the following hacker motors all on my shelf ready to install:

A80-10 180kv
A100-10 150kv
A150-8 166kv

And i have a Hacker Masterspin 170 and 200.

for batteries I have plenty of 6 cell 25c 6000 and 8000mah. So I can run 12s configurations of 6000, 8000, 12000, or 16000mah.

My original thinking was to go with the a100-10 on 12s 8000 swinging a 29-12 mejzlik.

I have lots of experience with the a80's and am pretty sure that would fly the plane on 12s 6000, but with limited punch-out. The a100 should be similar watts per pound (about 250) as my smaller planes with the a80.. the a150 would be sick power, but I would likely have to go to 12000 or 16000mah for decent flight time....

can anyone here help me out by sharing their experiences with these motors.

Btw... all up weight for the plabe with the a100 and 8000's is 27 pounds... havent weighed any other motor/ batt combination yet, but a80 with 6000 should be 2 pounds lighter and the a150 with 12000 would be 4 pounds heavier

It is all a balance between power, weight and flight duration.
I have a 2.6 meter wingspan IMAC model powered by the Plettenberg Predator 30/6.
Operating on 12s 12Ah (2x6Ah in parallel) I have a flight time of 10-11 minutes flying IMAC sequences.
6500W, 12.3 kg (27 lbs)
With 12s 8Ah I think you can expect a flight time of about 6-8 minutes, depending on flying style, power application etc.
According to the Hacker website the A80 is rated for 5 kW, but isn't that very conservative for that motor?
I think the A150 is way overkill for a 2.6m / 27 lbs model.

What it boils down to is your application.
For IMAC flying you need at least 8 minuts duration with good power at the end.
But seing you were expecting "limited punch out" with the A80, then I take it that IMAC is not your thing, as "punch out" is not really relevant in IMAC, other than maybe in Freestyle.

In you situation I would have started with the middle size motor and a medium battery capacity, tried it and adjusted from there.

I think the a80 is rated very conservatively at 5000 watts. On my other setups I am running 5500 watts and not breaking a sweat. These are in 3d/imac planes up to 22 pounds. I think I could push 6000 watts pretty easily, and If I can keep the weight down to 25 pounds, It might be acceptable.

I do not fly Imac (yet) - mostly just 3d and sport flying...

I have been thinking all along that the a100 was going to be the ticket, and that is what I am going to go with first - with 8ah packs. I may experiment with it from there and try the 80 and 150... It really is not much to swap motors - just got to find that balance. I would really like to have 10-12 minute flight times as it usually takes me the first 7 minutes to get into the groove...

Thanks for your input magne.

The motor in my Yak is probably undersized from what most people would use and I love it. With out any cooling the motor was coming down fairly warm but providing the motor with forced cooling through the motor it now comes down cool after a hard flight. IMHO some electric fliers don't give much thought to cooling and just figure if the motor is getting hot you need a larger motor. I also wonder if this weights in when a manufacture sets max recommended watts. Our brushless motors are air cooled and can easily put out 1000 watts of heat, about as much as a hair dryer. I would bet that by baffling the cowl so that air is forced thought the stator the A80 could be pushed to the power level you want and live quite happily. The up side is a lighter plane.

What motor is in your yak? What size of airframe?

do you have any pics of your baffling to the motor?

It is an OMP Yak55 102 inch, Suppo A7050. Picture is of my Sukhoi, I installed a dummy radial but the plate behind it is solid and only allows air to travel through the motor. On the yak I also installed a tube, actually a plastic cup the right size, that fits around the motor can so the air that goes around the motor stays close to it to pick up heat. I have done the same thing on my warbirds were I install a plate inside the cowl and only the motor fits through it. So the air that comes into the intake has to travel through the motor to get out.
Love the CompARFs by the way.

I'm starting with the a100-10. I think this will be super reliable at 7500 watts, which should be just right

How many mahs did you use on the 9 min flight? I missed my timer beep and flew 9 minutes by mistake, usually fly 7 minutes. Luckily I noticed it was down on power a little and landed. Put 5500 back on a 5800 pack, not good. Am thinking of getting some 8000 packs the next battery order.

9 minute used 6200mah. Only a few full power rips... mostly floating around half throttle

here is a video of the maiden.... nothing too spectacular. Plane was way out of trim on take off- had to put in about 20 kliks of down... very tail heavy as well on the first flight. Moved the battery packs ahead an inch and was way better.

Gerald's 260 (5 min 15 sec)
