Your build looks great Eric! Nice to have some better quality photos and accurate weight info on the light weight layup model. So thats 12.5oz of total noseweight and an AUW of 73oz for the non metric folks. I think you'll have lots of fun at that weight! If Alex flew his heavy layup (+/-95oz) in 20mph, you ought to be able to fly yours in 15mph if you dial in the camber and go easy on the elevator. Always nice to have more wind for the maiden though so you can get everything dialed in. Let us know how it goes!

Were you able to get a good range check with the rx on the battery?

Yes I got a full range check beyond specification which surprised me. I used masking tape and some small bits of foam(from an MKS servo case), to get the antennas on the right angles. This also has the antennas up close to or touching the inside of the fuse wall rather than sitting down on the battery. I was really happy with the space in the fuse and didn't have to grind the fuse down.

Will report back as soon as I get some wind. The forecast looks bad unfortunately.

Before I commit to buying a heavy one over the lighter one

Is there a known wing and tailplane area available (FAI wing area)?

Only reason I ask is my best guesstimate of that combined area is maybe circa 26dm so with a little shaving or maybe getting a slightly lighter one shipped (if available) I could get one to squeak in under the 75g/dm maximum FAI wing loading. Would need to be flying weight of under 2kg I guess. Reason is some potential for take on a couple of the FAI and certainly national records with the toy.

Hi Tim,

Excluding the area enclosed by the fuselage, the wing area is 23.96 sq dm and the stab is 1.9 sq dm. Looks like it just squeakes in under the 26 sq dm limit... Let me know what you need as far as layup / weight / strength are concerned.

Here is some video of the 59oz K2mDP at Parker Mtn:

Thanks for the reply. I will shoot you an email as well.

FAI rules actually count the fuselage area under the wing and the tails by some quirk of ancient free flight history.

I remember seeing a pantograph being used during processing for an Electric W/C years ago and weights being checked to then see a few embarrassed pilots super gluing bits of balsa to tailplanes to make the loading

Based on your numbers and the fairly slim fuz I guess safe area is going to be 26dm for a max wt of 1950+g or 69oz'ish. So based on Ezza's recent build (2080) not much to lose at all. Lose an Oz at the tail and 4 in the nose to match and it would be a close thing

The only other minor one might be the nose Radius as per below but some sandpaper if I ever take it toward record attempts will do the job.

That 59oz version looked good in the air too but I reckon the 300g of materials would be well worth it for taking some more G's.

Sorry Geek Stuff
1.4.1. Surface Area
The surface area includes the total surface of the wings and that of the horizontal or oblique stabilising
surface or surfaces. The surfaces taken for calculation are the orthogonal projection on to a horizontal
plane of the surfaces in question with each surface at zero incidences.
When wings or stabilising surfaces are built into the fuselage of the model aircraft the surface taken into
account shall include that area contained within the normal contours of the flight surfaces extended so as
to meet at the plane of symmetry of the model.

Good man, Asto! You will really like the K2m. Hope you are getting a light one so you can fly it more often

I guess the video shows it all. Thanks for filming it Tim and Astan. Certainly not a great day for ds'ing. So happy that I now have a Kinetic to fly on our average days. It handled even better than I expected with no bad traits. Up real high I tried holding full elevator and it took 2-3 seconds before starting to drop a wing. The wind was way off angle but I was lucky to get those few laps in as the wind came on square for a bit. It felt real snappy in the turns and I can't wait for a good day with it. I'm really happy how it went on the frontside and especially how it slowed down for landing. The K2M is as good as it gets and with all the super accurate MKS servos it is a real treat to fly!

Thanks for the Video Timbo.
I was straight under the plane about a metre away waiting for a hand catch and he flew away. because Ezza couldn't see me in the lantana.
Choice vid and unreal plane Spencer. Can't weight for mine now. Definately a keeper mate.
That was the worst conditions I've flown in Cactus and it flew great.

Would of been over 200s in the arvo when it cleaned up.
