New Plane - 30" Boneyard 1 WIng

I built a new wing based on the BluCore Wing of joining the beveled leading edge with tape. I made my wing a little longer root and tip chord, thinner wing. Also used a single piece of foam for the bottom wing, then attached two top halves. Used a carbon rod but it really didn't need it as the wing comes out stiff anyway. Also I am now using lamination to strengthen the middle of the wing and try to keep the nose from going soft. Need an indestructible nose cone. Using small vinyl wing tips. AUW is 400 grams, kind of porky. Aluminum motor mount made from aluminum angle stock attached to airframe with zip ties. Love zip ties.

Had to move motor way forward as I only have 900mah battery. Need some lighter motors and heavier batteries. Always something else.

This wing seems floatier than the Blucore wing I built but not as aerobatic but it may be that I still don't have the trim and cg worked out yet.

I left the paper on this wing then discovered the heavy plasticized paper weights 60 grams so I built another wing without it and stiffened it up with laminate. Very light and strong. That will be my Boneyard 2 wing. I want to try the Armin wing construction next.

Anyway, its great that anyone can make these things. I like the fact I can have a new wing in 4 hours. The idea of a flying wing is so simple and cool.

Update 4/30: my vinyl tip stabilizers flew right off on the first toss. Hotglue does not seem to adhere to vinyl very well. So cut some Assassin type tips and flew it without any wing tips. Flew very nicely except I had some erratic behavior. I would be turning around into the wind and the wing would duck almost violently. Didn't know at the time what caused it so kept flying till finally spun it into the dirt. Turned out to be a loose control horn that broke loose from the foam. Reinforced both horns which seem to break loose from the foam if not reinforced. Think I will work on the stabalizers a bit. Also added some epp tips but would like to fly without any at all. Added a vinyl nose cone type thing to see if it will keep the nose intact a little longer.

Also added a carbon rod spar across the rear span of the two wings to hopefully keep the middle of the wing from splitting in a hard crash. Not sure how well it will work but am sure will have opportunity soon to test it. Now I have something to tie a streamer to. Windy today but I have a feel now for this wing so will fly it anyway - need to get more comfortable with the wind.

This wing is a whole lot faster now without the big epp tips I put on it originally but still quite the floater. Am using 1700kv motor with 900mah lipo and 20amp esc. AUW is now 430 grams with the vinyl bra thingy.

Put 3 batteries through this plane this evening and it flies great -about 12 minutes on 900 mah lipo. It also bounces nicely and with some rough landings I didn't hurt it at all.

Update 5/01: put 5 more batteries through this plane - flies fantastic. Used some laminate to cover a dented wing but no other damage so far. It does nice smooth rolls (low throws) and inside loops and great gliding. But just really nice flying around our football stadium. Also, the vinyl nose has made this a very tough bird for only a 20 gram weight gain and at least the gain of weight is in the nose.

My Boneyard 2 will not use fins, is completely laminated, 60 grams lighter and I will not cut out any of the middle of the wing to accomodate moving the motor forward if I can possibly help it so I will have a few more square inches of wing surface.
Update 5/4: Oh bummer. I just discovered I have been flying with the elevator (up and down) control stick reversed - forward was up and back was down. Have now reversed them. Now I have to learn how to fly all over again. Did FMS for an hour and then went to the football field and was able to fly with only one crash. Going to take a while to get confident again. This wing is really tough, plowed into the artificial turf pretty hard and the vinyl nose soaked up the impact. Just threw the battery out.
It also pulled the rear carbon spar out on one side but the wings did not split apart so I have to assume the spar soaked up the stress of the wings spreading apart too.

Update 5/12: Have retired this wing as I have bashed it too many times. Still flies but getting heavier with glue and the nose is pretty deformed. Took some really hard hits as I am relearning how to fly with the elevator stick reversed. After the fins broke off one time I decided to fly it finless like the Assassin. Works pretty good but mine waggles a bit due to the added cuts to the wing not being equal. Pretty funny kindof. I think I like flying finless, one less thing to worrry about.

Have finished Boneyard 2 Wing and just need to maiden.

Update 5/14: On Boneyard 2 wing I have discarded vinyl nose idea, way too heavy - around 1.5 ounces and it just fractures on impact anyway. Will just use more laminate to reinforce nose area. This new wing has huge lift but I haven't worked out the cg yet. It is finless. I launch it with a little reflex in the elevons. Goes up and if the wind catches it it noses up violently. Either way too nose heavy, tail heavy or thrust line is off. Using bicycle spokes for control rods.
AUW is 13.5 ounces.
Have ordered some 9mm epp and will build new wing that hopefully will be less prone to fracturing.

Update 5/24: Finished my Boneyard 3 9mm EPP wing. Test flying it now. Much tougher than earlier wings. Think it safe to say I will not be going back to foam board any time soon.

Update 5/29: BoneYard 2 finless wing: cut out the mushy nose and replaced with two layers of 9mm EPP, hotglue, spray adhesive and laminated. Very strong repair. This wing flies very well and I feel very confident with it though I don't do a lot of aerobatics yet. I have toed the wing tips in and it flies finless beautifully.

Update 6/10: had routed motor wires on bottom of wing/motor mount and too many landings had shorted them out so replaced 1500kv with 1800kv and routed wires over top of motor mount. Now wing is faster and more secure.
