Looking for Balsa Flying Wing

Looking for the next project and ideally would like to find a simple 40 - 60" span balsa built up flying wing. Targeted use is general slope and/or thermal flying and mildly acrobatic. You know the kind of thing you can chuck off the local hill, play around in light lift, catch a few thermals as they roll through, then hand catch it when you're ready to go home. Searched around and could only find foamies or pointers to vintage designs. Any current plans or kits that fit this description?

There's a HET wing, but I'm not sure how good it is. Not many write-ups or photos. Do a search here on RCG.
More suitable would be the German Yoda wing.

And don't forget to make a build thread...

I don't know if you're going to get decent thermal performance at that size. I vaguely remember Keith Shaw had a flying wing rchlg design quite a few years back, but I don't know how well it flew. I think it was in one of the magazines, maybe Model Builder, Model Aviation, or Flying Models.

Maybe you can find something here:
http://www.b2streamlines.com
Note that they've been writing a flying wing column for many years, so there's probably something like what you want in there someplace.

This one looks cute:

so does this one:

too small:

Some of these are balsa:

Well I'm currently flying 50" hand launch gliders, maybe it's all relative but they seem to thermal well. So I figure if I keep it light I should be good.

Thanks for all the pointers. I have looked at the Windlord many times but it is just too much of a project right now, but some day. I did follow the links posted and in one related thread I found the "little plank" RCM plan #492. Anyone ever build one of those? Maybe update it with a PW106 airfoil?

Flying wings may have a bit more sink rate, so they'll need to be bigger to have decent performance. Or at least that's my intuition about it.

Peck Polymers had their 59" w. s. Genesis, which is out of production at this time.

Occasionally a kit will show up for sale here on RC Groups or on eBay.

I ran across this plan which you might find interesting (about 450 kb):

Looks like if you shrunk it to half size and put in ailerons, it could be a lot of fun. Airfoils are thin but maybe for half size they ought to be a little thinner?

Thanks again for the link. After looking at the plans for a few days it is really growing on me. A search did not turn up any builds or reviews. Do you know if the designer, Chuck Clemans is around? I would like to hear how the rudder elevator version compares to the full house version as a pure glider for thermal hunting. Too bad this isn't RES legal with the bottom flaps.

I don't know anything about him. If you manage to find him and get advice, it would probably be nice for you to buy his plan if he is selling them. Maybe he has a smaller one.

I would ask B2 Streamlines. That glider looks familiar and perhaps they've covered it. They have an article archive from their column.

Maybe you could make spoilers work and tape over the flaps when you're at RES contests. Might help to put the spoilers as far aft as is legal.

P.S. If I was building it I'd be tempted either to make the elevators wider or make most of the trailing edge an elevator. Better lift distribution that way. With the right combination of increased elevators and c.g., you could have a pretty good lift distribution all the time.

I think this is a rip-snorter of a plan, even though Mr Clemans can't spell 'Chippewa' and the wing might benefit from 'rationalising' the control surfaces.

By the way, Chuck Clemans is a contributor to this forum. Just search and pop the question.
