Question

How many of us are there?

Does anyone know of any statistics relating to how many people in the world currently fly RC gliders? Or in which countries it is most popular (either in total numbers or as a percentage of population)? Anyone care to hazard some guesses??

Being an Australian, I'm personally particularly curious as to how many RC glider flyers (or flyers of all types of RC aircraft) there are in Australia....

I hope some of you can help satisfy my curiousity and perhaps others might find it at least a little intriguing as well.

Regards,

Kye

Just how many surf this forum?

I know of about 5-6 that visit the slope forum regularly. Dont know about the rest of them though. I know of about 10-12 more people that slope at my flying spots that dont access this forum or the net.

Cheers,

Hi Kye,

Im a fellow Aussie, where you from ?
There seems to be a quiet rise in sloping here in Aus, given the great weather and the multitude of good flying sites.

Numbers in Australia

Hi Aussie,

I can only speak from what I have heard from the VMAA.

There are approx 10000 members of RCAS + who knows how many uninsured.

My club VARMS is a predominately gliding club and we have approx 250 members. I know that there are a couple of other glider specific clubs in Aus.

So with these clubs + the people who fly gliders sometimes and powered mostly, I'd guess that there would be probably 2000 or so who fly gliders.

Ahhh... that's the spirit Steve! You're the first person that's dared to come up with an actual estimated figure for the current number of RC glider flyers in Australia..... well done!

So, 2,000 people currently fly RC gliders in Australia.....? Anyone else want to place their bets? Does that sound reasonable to most?

How about the rest of the world??

I think we could easily come up with 2,000 glider pilots who live in Southern Calif! Perhaps that many in just Orange County where I live--- Hmmmm--- I would hazard a guess that Calif would have 10,000 part time glider pilots-- 5,000 dedicated to gliders!

That figures that Souther California would have about as many glider pilots as the whole of Australia, the population must be about the same ? I cant be sure but Im guessing Australias total population to be around 19 million people. Im sure its a ratio thats fairly consistant around the world, poorer countries maybe not so. Like, one nutty RC pilot per 10,000 people.
