I was rummaging through my pile o'stuff and ran across that 8mm shaft 3 bladed head. Hmmm, what's this...shims on both sides of the blades? I measured the grips and found they take 12mm blades! . Looks like a T500 powered .50 size Funkey AS350 might be in the works at some point .
Now for a decision making process, do I ambandon the .30 size Jet Ranger all together and make a run for the .50 AS350 as the mechanics are pretty much ready to go, just add more boom and belt and slap the head on. Or do I piece together another stretch machine? I do have a "Ranger" type heli already with my 700 size Long Ranger....hmmm |

I would keep the JR as is and piece together another stretch 500.
My question though would be will the 8mm 500 hold a 3 blade head with 600mm blades ? Also will the 500 size mini servos be enough to control and keep the blades and head in check ? I'm pretty sure I have figured out a way to turn a 450 into a 500 and keep the stress's and strain to a minimum,I think I'll order me some parts and see if I can make it work. |

Yeah, that's a couple good questions. I think you'd have to get some really light 600mm blades. I need to compare what those 425mm scale plastic blades weigh with 600mm CF's. Also run the blade CG/weight/rpm calcs to see if it has similar loading to when it spun at ~1800 with the 425's to see if there is a chance of grenading that head. Servo-wise...I think it might be ok, nothing funny-like with a pair of 550's so far and they stay cool. And that 3 blader has a pretty good ratio to it.
I dunno-started pricing out a frame and Align/Tarot style tail, seemed kinda $$ to me. Then electronics...shoot, that's a whole new heli (duhhhh). Maybe a project for next winter when there is Black Friday sales on stuff (and that unpainted AS350 is in stock hopefully...I want to move those rear skid downtubes to where they are supposed to be, so unpainted it is, cheaper too) How 'bout some details on that 450-500? Servo-wise, I highly recommend getting DS95's...kinda pricey, but REAL good. Definately will drive that head I think |

Cool.
I celebrated painting the headblock of the JR with some video today:
I was also doing some max collective observations trying to figure if the T500 could handle the drag of 3 600mm blades. My conclusion was...maybe, maybe not. I am running some tired BlueLipos, and only 3000mah at that. And the lame CC gov (spoiled by vbar). I dunno, maybe with some high C batteries, maybe bigger than 3000's also. Real hard to tell with the battery and esc combo I have if the motor would be up to that kind of load, or if the motor was getting bogged with just 2 550's or not. I kinda wish I had an extra 550mm blade handy to do a closer test by doing a quick head swap. |

It is one of those Smartmodel heads. With the L shaped arms coming off the grips.

Yep. It's smaller diameter I believe than the 600 size they have. Kinda a bonus how they do that, ship 4 1mm plastic shims to fit 10mm blades to it...with an upgrade path.
I've been pricing out the Tarot 500 parts bin for the parts I want should I duplicate another stretch, getting tempted. Kinda a killer how the only CF frame is like $60 at HK, or buy a whole EXI500CF and throw most of it away. If the frame was priced 450 frame style...well that would me more tempting. Now if I crashed my 450 Apache that would be an easy choice then, steal the Vbar out of that, and proceed. So many helis I'm not too enamored with...but I put so much work into them it'd be a shame to part them out, lol. I'm so wishy-washy on this idea, but the more I think of it the more interesting it gets. |

Here is an aluminum and plastic frame for $27.78.
http://leaderhobby.com/product.asp?ID=9394001210044 Both of my 500 and 550 I'm using the aluminum frame on them it seems to be more stiff then the CF frame. |
