Question

What company supplies really good wood model boat kits?

I am new to this but have a lot of experience building RC planes and wood working so I consider myself an intermediate builder. I would appreciate some suggestions as to who the best kit manufacturers are for wood boats. Mostly interested in cruisers and runabouts. Will be installing RC running gear.

Thanks,

Curt

Welcome to the wetter side!

Mack. The best... looks for the "Legends" name.

And while you're there, pick up a how-to book:

The Legend Model Boats line from MACK Products is a very good line of kits. All of them have had build logs or reviews on this site. Here is their current lineup:
Century Thunderbolt
1963 Lyman Soft Top Sleeper
1930 Dodge 21'6" Split Cockpit Runabout
1950 Jersey Speed Skiff
1952 Century Sea Maid
California Cracker Box
1935 Garwood Speedster MISS BEHAVE
1922 Gold Cup Racer MISS SEVERN

from the type of boat your after mack products is your best bet. For other designs midwest which is out of business has some good kits. Look on ebay to find them.

Yep, after a few kits from that 'other' company, I built the Legend Century Sea Maid. Legend is the way to go. you can also call Rich who is very helpful if you have questions or get stuck.

If you are "just getting your feet wet" take a look at Pat's Custom Models, he has plans for simple starter and more complex designs that may interest you . One has laser cut keel and hull formerparts included with the plans, the rest are plans with full size cutting patterns.

Check out the short kits and plans for model planes too:

It looks like a lot of modelers agree with my pick, and it's Rich Koll and M.A.C.K. Products hands down for quality materials.

Sorry Dumas, but you've got to move up from using recycled packing crate wood---.

Hey, I resemble that remark.

Yes the wood does come from packing crates but it is Baltic Birch that came from Finland and Germany.

Naah the wood is ok, if they just NOT outsourced it to Italy, where they aperently cut it with a showel...
If they just... could lazer it all themselwes it would be premium kits. (i only got to to my "knowlege" on a Cobra (on shelf) and a CC 36" commander i am building at the moment, good kit bad showel-cutting medium instruction) But i still want to get more Dumas kits.

When was the last time you bought a Dumas kit, Kap?

Last Dumas kit I bought was very nice- the quality of the wood was on par with Legend and it was all laser cut, like Legend- (fittings in the Legend kits are still vastly superior)

Sure, Dumas' older kits are die-cut, and the wood isn't always 'aircraft grade' but they build into fine boats.

Don't write Dumas off just yet-
