Wing area vs Elevator area


Don't know if here or the builder workshop is the right place to post, but

Is there an ideal ratio for wing area compared to horizontal stabilizer?

It depends on the type of plane and the flying style.

There are some basic ratios or rules of thumb that people have cooked up, but they're pretty much made to be broken.

Hey now,
While there are plenty of variables for a average sport or stunt model with um, normal proportions. Twenty percent of the wing area minimum for stable flight. Average is twenty five percent and thirty is huge. Often race or speed models will have long fuses and not need so much control so they may get down to fifteen percent. The longer the tail the smaller the stab can be if you don't care much for aerobatics.
If you get much more than square in tail length you get so much stability you can't stunt. Notice that most pattern ships are square. That is the wing span and fuse length are the same. Much shorter you start to get twitchy. Much longer, no stunts. Get it? Other than that if it looks about right it'll fly about right.
Now. Get busy designing.

The full size Zero fighter had a relatively oversized stab. One of the reasons it was so agile and makes a good model.

The smallest tail in my fleet is 15%. It flies OK. The rest are in the region of 20%.

Around 20% is typical for a 'normal' configuration.. But the tail area can vary from 0% (flying wing) to a several hundred % (canard).. and all points in-between.

depends on the length of the fuz. Bewteen 20% to 25% and 12% for the vertical stab (tailfin and rudder) normal type plane.

Thanks for the info, Ive had this design for awhile, but the tail never quite looked right to me, I do want it to do aerobatics so ...

The tail looks fine but its a bit close to the wing. I would lengthen the rear fuselage by around 50%. Otherwise it will be very twitchy in pitch and you will find it hard to do smooth aerobatics.

Suggest you study the plan view of multiple model types - sailplanes, pattern aircraft, 3D - and consider their flying styles while you're at it.

+1, it looks like a nice design but it is very short coupled. Typically the gap between the TE of the wing and the LE of the tail is at least 1.5 x wing chord. Short coupled planes can fly ok but longer coupling gives more stability.
