Not sure if this has been posted elsewhere but it probably needs to be reposted here:

So does this new bill now allow for the legal, commercial use of UAV's by people like us or is it just for the big boys?

Nothing is allowed or disallowed yet, the NPRM has to happen and you will have to ASTM F-38 standards when it is all in place. Will the AMA allow autonomous flight, thats the question. If not then your stuffed unless you are part of a group that has submitted the paperwork.
This bill is being consistently misread these days, all it really provides so far is a safe haven for non commercial model aircraft flight. Keeps the jets and large scale folks happy. All model aircraft regardless of size are now UAS be they private or commercial as they can be controlled in three axis and are unmanned, balloons and kites are exempt. |

The soonest anyone will be allowed in the air is law enforcement, first responders, and fire departments. Supposedly they are to be allowed to play 90 days from the date the bill was signed, March 27th, with aircraft under 4.4lbs. The problem is, the FAA gets to decide what "reasonable" sense and avoid is. So we're back to square one.

1984 "Big Brother is Watching You"
George Orwell came out with the book in 1949 but conceived it back in 1948 from what I remember in studying the book back in my university days.
Even with 1940 's technology anybody can design a drone or FPV using a vacuum tube radio telemetry system and a 35 mm film camera. George Orwell saw this coming 64 years ago. The cat is out of the bag in human evolution and there is no turning back. We just have to deal with it . If you have something to hide then cover it up. Stop lying naked in your back yard, the suns no good for you anyways, and install tinted glass windows in your houses. Problem solved! |

The real Gorilla in the room is the Military Industrial players and their teat swingers maneuvering for an exclusive and manipulating the facts, bribing officials and clouding the issue with sock puppet Chicken Little's. Greed and avarice are business as usual for the USA I know and used to love. "Big Brother" is nothing but a euphemism for Totalitarianism in a technically advanced setting. Most of the non issue "Issues" we are dealing with are nothing but cleverly engineered manipulations of the bleating masses who for the most part are too grossly ignorant of the real issues to be able to cast a knowledgeable vote in the first place. Every time I see that "Big Brother" reference I want to scream. Don't you think that those who would have us live that way read the book(s) too? Be pretty stupid of them to not change the story line for their real world efforts and these folks that would have their own mother in servitude are decidedly not stupid. And why do you care, you don't live here anyway. Rob |

I agree with Rob... Jumping on the bandwagon. It is already too late for privacy in this country.

I hope we will have no more regulations than gun owners, but that seems less and less likely. I think that is something we could all live with as drone users. It's not like it is difficult to own or operate a firearm in the USA. Maybe we need to enlist the help of the NRA.

camship has it, while this privacy issue plays out the military vendors will be busy sewing up the airworthy standards to their end.

That's pretty much in the bag. Why do you think they don't want any small business folks on the ARC?? Only guy talking about daylight, public process and fair and open regulation was me.

“We are not opposed to the use of domestic drones,” said Catherine Crump, an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union. “There are a broad range of uses for this technology to meet legitimate law enforcement needs. At the same time, we are concerned that they not become tools of general or pervasive surveillance.” Crump also advocated for a robust debate on the rules governing the public and private use of drones.
I find this an interesting comment, but also find it hilarious. You can't go into a gas station or turn a street-corner here in Atlanta w/out at LEAST 8 cameras at the stoplights. These cameras are monitored full time - not during "active law-enforcement" activities. There will never be 8 "drones" (I hate this word - or at least the spin that the media largely puts on it) per intersection - yet people are worried about "privacy". :smh: |

The reality is - for cameras/sensors to be effective against anything - they have to run full time. That means that in order to buy a coke and a bag of potato chips at the local convenience store, you are rewarded by having your actions monitored/recorded... just as the guy who robbed the place last week.
Look on youtube video of police dash cams - many from people who were never actually convicted of a crime in the end. Also CCTV videos from grocery store patrons who wore the wrong outfit - was fat - or slipped and fell on aisle 4. There are non law enforcement incidents that were made public just bc the operators deemed it funny. I agree with Gary - privacy hasn't exisited for many years. |
