My old glow powered Sure Flite Spitfire was a little snappy, also....the horizontal tail was scale and fairly small in area and the wing had no wash out molded in.

Was a fun model, though. Was incredibly fast to build.

I would like to find a foam Midwest Chipmunk, as well...they could be a very cool modern electric conversion.

There was a mint Cox Cessna 210 Centurion at a recent swap meet...was sorely tempted, but sat on my wallet....was something over 100 bucks, but less than they go for on Ebay. I flew one of those a lot back around 1978.

Pure nostalgic fun.

Pookielips, any chance you can make the trip?..would LOVE to see your vintage stuff there.
I would love to go to the SMALL meet, but it is too far to drive. I work for the airlines and can get there easily, but could only pack my R/C conversions of the Goldberg Cessna 180 and Shoestring. Russ Farris

Those Pilot ARFs with the foam skin were interesting...sort of a forerunner of todays built up Depron models.

I had a Pilot/RPM Snark back around 1985, high wing three channel electric trainer, and it was the depron over balsa framework that was a PILL to repair! flew ok on a 540 can-type motor and eight sub-C NiCd cells. I kept it until the mid 1990s and gave it to a local kid that was interested in R/C....he went backwards of what we do today and installed an .049 and went flying!

Not sure what the exact definition of vintage is, but in my mind, it is kits that are at least 20 to 25 years old. So, the GWS foamies are just not as available, not vintage.

Still a fair amount of them around. A quick google search showed the GWS P-51 available from at least 9 places. Some of those could be dead ends, but not all of them.

we have some fun pictures coming soon for this thread. We got all the vintage foam ARFs together for some group photos and some formation flights at SMALL 2012 in Little Rock, AR two weeks ago.

Cox (Kyosho) Cessna 182, electric conversion
Cox (Kyosho) RF-5 Sportavia, electric conversion
Kraft (Kyosho) Chipmunk, updated electric system
Kraft (Kyosho) Cessna Cardinal, updated electric system
MRC Ryan STA
Bentom Edleweisse

All the 30 year old Kyosho ARFs make amazing electric conversions/updates.

I used to have a Cox (Kyosho) Centurion, converted to fly with a geared AP29BB. It flew well, and I don't remember why I sold it. I also have the MRC Ryan STA in a box, as well as a Bentom Schweizer that was already partially assembled when I got it.

Don't know if this qualifys but it is a foamy from 1990. Byron Christen Eagle I bought around 92 with a Quadra 50 in it. Stripped the glass covering off to lighten it up and covered with HK covering film. Turnigy 3000 watt motor flies better than the gasser. First foam wing I hot wire cut was for a Fokker DR1 in the late 60s. Put together a few Kyosho kits from the late 80s. Chipmunk, Zero and Christen eagle. They all flew well.

Gord.
