Anyone else playing with 12mm inrunners?

We've been having a ball around here with the Medusa 12mm motors but I think I'm down to the only one left... My friend John has been playing with a cheap $12 version on 3 cells, it's kinda pokey compared to the Medusa 5300Kv.

I sure wish that Medusa was still around.. I hear Neumotors was making a version with a larger shaft but that won't work with the direct drive props we use. They are GWS 3-3's cut down and reprofiled. The one in the video is almost stock to get the amp draw up even on 3 cells:

I think 2mm is the larger shaft size, I might end up having to make a fixture to accurately open up the prop holes for us.

Nice video Dave. Is that the Hobbyking motor, or the Medusa?

Sent a inquiry to Fiegao for an order of 20 12 x 31mm 5300kv motors.

The Neu 12mm motors are also great on a cut down GWS 3x3! Shown below. Steve has been doing the brushless thing a very long time for those of you that don't know him. His products are very top shelf, and reliable.

Our experience is that the chinese motors aren't very good-the Feigao 5300kv was not in the same league as the Medusa 5300 a few years ago.. I don't know what motor was in John's plane in the video, but it's very mild-That was an almost stock prop on 3s and it is way down on speed compared to a 2c 5300kv Medusa.

It's good to know Steve's version is available with the old shaft dia., I lost my flying motor when my dad hit a house and my spare was waiting for an edf project.

I still fly 2 medussa 5300's on my Adrenaline Rush and Phast Ride. For best 2s performance I used Graupner 3x3 props. Fast and very little prop noise. On 3s I used GWS 3x2 props but noisey. They are faster with the 3s set up but close to max amp draw. I figure they do about 80 mph. Loads of fun and always a hit at an airshow.

Close to 80 is about right for a good prop on the 2s 5300, which is hauling booty for such a little airplane. John tried the 3-3 CAM props and couldn't tell a difference compared to the cut down Graupners we were using-which just goes to show you that prop sizes and shapes don't matter all that much because efficiency falls off a cliff once under 5" diameter. It would have been nice to stay with the Graupners but we didn't have prop drivers to fit and reprofiling the GWS 3-3's to 2.5" or so and sweeping the tips only takes a set of calipers and 20 minutes. It goes quick when you BS in the basement with a flying buddy.

This past year I put the micro electrics on the back burner to fly glow in the same planes with the Cox TD .010. That was a nice change of pace (and a huge step backwards even if I enjoyed it more) but it's time to make another one of these planes for electric, probably a Rivits.

Hyperion also makes a 12mm diameter inrunner in 4100Kv, 5300Kv, and 5800Kv.
