Wind Dancer power options?

I just scored a partially built Wind Dancer (lucky me). Most of the Wind Dancer threads are several years old, and since technology marches on, I was wondering what would be the hot set up to power this thing with todays world of choices. This is my first real ALES bird (if you don't count the Radian), so I have limited experience with electrics, coming mainly from the DLG end of things.
Thanks,
Dave

i am building one now. i have a neu 2500 razor, i am also looking at the hyperion glider slope model, i dont have the number handy at this moment. i am thinking of hs 65 all around or hv sevos from specktrum,. they are light and powerful. expensive and overkill. the critical servos will be the flap. are you going poly or flat wing?

I'm doing the full house wing, four DS 285 is what I have in mind. Probably use them on R+E too.

I'm not as bad as they say.
Hey Dave,
Any thoughts about an ALES event at SF?
Was starting to consider an ALES airplane myself.

Motor Skorpion geared http://www.reisenauer.de/artikeldeta...1437&sprache=2

Prop Graupner 17x9

Esc SunRise 60A http://www.reisenauer.de/artikeldetails.php5?aid=1421

Yeah that is sweet.
I'm only using old F5B power because that's what I have.

One of the older Wind Dancer threads talked about good results with a Hacker 2020L motor. I bought one and installed it in my Wind Dancer. It works great. With a 3S battery, it gets to 200 m in a little over 30 sec. using a 9X5 prop. Bench tests with a 10X8 prop indicates that the plane should get to 200m in well under 30 sec.

One problem with the 2020L is that there isn't room to run the leads back from the of the front of the motor. The rotating part of the outrunner is at the rear. What I did was route the leads outside the fuselage and then back in again behind the motor.

You can mount a prop adapter on the rotating bell end of the motor (I think mine came with it, or you may be able to purchase separately), and mount the fixed end with the wires to a firewall.

Mesa AZ, it's a dry heat!

Winddancers

I have built and flown several of these, with both S400 and outrunner motors. The Hacker is the best choice, with 2S and a 12X7 Aeronaut prop. you may exceed the recommended current, but for the short time the motor runs in ALES or LMR events, it is not a problem. I have run the motor with a 13" prop on 2 cells at higher elevations (5000' +) without problems.

Other options

You have other options: (got from Hyperflight UK).

HET 2W-25 geared 6.7:1, 3S 1.5Ah LiPo, 20x13 RF prop (2300 fpm, 50A)
HET 2W-25 geared 6.7:1, 3S 1.3Ah LiPo, 18.5x14 Aeronaut prop (1920 fpm, 41A)
HET 2W-25 geared 6.7:1, 4S 1.5Ah LiPo, 18.5x14 Aeronaut prop (3400 fpm, 69A)
HET 2W-25 geared 6.7:1, 4S 1.3Ah LiPo, 18x11 Aeronaut prop (2800 fpm, 52A)
HET 2W-25 geared 6.7:1, 4S 1Ah LiPo, 17x11 Aeronaut prop (2370 fpm, 42A)
Hyperion Gs3020-08 direct drive, 3S 1.5Ah LiPo, 13x7 Aeronaut prop (2250 fpm, 70A)
Hyperion Gs3020-08 direct drive, 3S 1.5Ah LiPo, 12x8 Aeronaut prop (1880 fpm, 61A)
Mega 16/25/2 geared 4.4:1, 3S 1.5Ah LiPo, 16x10 Aeronaut prop (2100 fpm, 57A)
Mega 16/25/3 geared 4.4:1, 3S 1.5Ah LiPo, 20x13 RF prop on +7 spinner (2150 fpm, 49A)
Mega 16/25/2 geared 6.7:1, 3S 1.5Ah LiPo, 20x13 RF prop (2400 fpm, 56A)

I think also you can use a Hacker A20-8xl 4.4/1 with a 23x12 prop, very efficient and low cost, but not high-end...

Cheers!

I'm running a Scorpion SII 2215-1127 V2 with great success. On 3-cell with an Aeronaut 9x5 it pulls around 18A and 207W. This Wind Dancer will hit 200M in 22 seconds, but note that this plane is on the lighter side at around 23oz.

I ran my WD with a geared S400 for quite a while but wanted more oomph and less gear noise. Someone suggested a direct drive Mega 1625-6 inrunner. This avoids the interference problem with wires of an outrunner. I ran this on a 2 cell LIPO for quite a while. In preparation for ALES, I bought a 1000mAH 3 cell. It balances okay and screams. I always have a lot a charge left when I land.
