Build Log

$tree Flying Wing Fighter/FPV

Iv started to build a few $tree wings inspired by my early failed attempts at deltas and wings. Starting off I found measurements of a basic Flying wing design and adapted them to fit $tree foam better.

The Two Versions are named "Iron Feather" the lighter one and "Strato V" the FPV version.

!!!UPDATE!!!
--Iron Feather has CG problems that are very difficult to fix. Please wait to build until modifications are complete.
--Iron Feather Has been Fixed and is undergoing testing. Moving the motor forward 2" and adding wood to the leading edge helps make balancing much easier and a much stronger aircraft!
--Ill Post Modified Plans as soon as They are complete

Strato V Is flying great! Make your CG about 7" from the nose. Iv calculated anywhere from 6.5" to 7.5" to work good.

My First wing (001) used 4 sheets of $Tree Foam
My latest Design (002) uses 2 sheets and is almost the same design.

The goal of this project is to build a "Trainer Wing" since my first wing would recover from any way you can position it and level off. Its only shortfall for a trainer is that it would stay in any turn you put it in since there is no dihedral.

Being a stable Trainer that is durable will make a great FPV or Combat platform as well!

Requirements:
--Cheap and easy to build
--No crazy techniques to build
--Common supplies
--Affordable electronics
--Durable Airframe (My 001 model survived hitting a telephone pole at full throttle, and recovered before falling to the ground to continue flight)
--Fun to fly! (A challenge with wings, due to their CG sensitivity)

I am currently testing two models. 002 with a KFM2 (Pictured below) and 002.5 with a "Traditional" airfoil (Currently being built).

The Build Video and Details will be up shortly since I am still testing the wings.
The Build Video is covering everything from where to buy parts to setting up the controls and testing. So it may take a few days for that.

Current Specs:

250g no electronics
2 sheets of $tree Foam
2 3/16" hard wood dowels
3 1/4" square hard wood dowels
1 3/8" Square Dowel for motor mount
Fiberglass reinforced Tape ($8 roll from home depot can make about 3 planes!)
Clear packing tape
**Colored packing tape (Optional)

Wingspan 50"
overall length 17"

(Fits in average car! sorry geo metro owners probably wont fit)

Build Videos!
Cutting the parts (Same for both 001 and 002 models)
ATOM RC - Cutting the Wing 001 - 002 (3 min 5 sec)

Building the Strato V (heavier faster version for FPV)
Sorry for the Video Quality (from about 8min to 14min), camera was running out of power and made poor recordings
ATOM RC - Building Strato V (Version 002) (18 min 11 sec)

Building the Iron Feather (Lighter trainer wing, I use them for combat)
Iron Feather Build (11 min 47 sec)

Up Next: Building the wing - 002
Coming soon: Building the wing - 001

In the Future: Electronics and Trimming, and Flight and sub-trim!

Thanks! Iv just had so many people around town interested and when I tell them less than $100 for everything (Batteries, Charger, Remote TX/RX, Servos, motors, ESC, control rods and horns) The are even more interested.

I handed my V001 over to some random guy at a disk golf course and he flew it no problem! Even after many wrecks and damages I put it through before. His only problem was stalling since he never flew before, forgot to give it throttle

Finalizing the 002 prototype and it is awesome! Did a test flight at 10:30pm in the dark. This is amazingly fast! Luckily it was trimmed nice, balanced and setup correct. What was suppose to be a powered glide test at 50% throttle ended up as a full flight around our property in the dark! The weather is suppose to be poor tomorrow but hopefully it lets up to get a flight video and see if i can fly it nice and slow like the 001 model.

Updated supplies:

Needs 3 1/4" square hard wood dowels rather than 2 (added $0.96 gotta dig in the couch!)

Update!

The design started above is 200g heavier than my 001 model so its not as slow so ill be making reccomendations between the two for a stronger model and a lighter model.

All Versions Built!

002 Is fast and very stable for On board Video and FPV (Balanced mine for a 2200mAh battery)
001 Is much slower, cannot handle high speed but is fun at slow speeds.
TOP LEFT : Version 002 TOP RIGHT : Version 002 Prototype
BOTTOM LEFT: Version 001 BOTTOM RIGHT : Version 001 Prototype

001 prototype AUW: 356g
001 Airframe only: 145g
002 Prototype AUW: 675g
002 Airframe only: 276g

I am now testing various motors props and electronics.

i will post the differences between the two planes in their Build videos. Overall 001 has less wood structure hence less weight.
