Question

Molds from Machinable wax

Has anyone used Machinable wax for CNC milled molds?
http://www.machinablewax.com/index.htm

I was talking to someone about milling corian molds and he recommended using Machinable wax to make the first molds then moving to corian when the design is proven.

Has anyone tried it?
Did it hold up to vacuum bagging or pressure bladders?
How many pulls can you get from a wax mold?

Thanks

After reviewing the cost of the wax we scrapped the idea.

Maybe you can just get some purified bees wax (cheap or free if you can work the beekeeper). Its really hard and could work for a few pulls. The purified stuff is offwhite in color.

I got sticker shock when I looked at it too.

Corian is cheap relatively speaking.

I've machine machinable wax. Its fantastic stuff, cuts easily, and should last for a few pulls (>5). Its not worth the price over cheaper materials like Corian though.

not bad for one eye
I got a $1700.00 quote yesterday for modeling board! That's insane.

if youre looking into machining corian, check out:

craigslist
ebay

keep an eye out for people remodeling their houses/kitchens. sometimes they just leave the whole dang countertop out for the trash collectors.

so far, corian rocks my socks.

case in point. these things are even precut for a small fuselage sized mold...or wheelpants... or canopies... or whatever... i might need to grab some of these...
