I bought one of the $20 USB stick dev systems, but found it pretty hard to use.

My experience level is lots of PIC assy, and PICAXE Basic, no C.

There are 8 pages in the ~300 page manual for just the a/d.

Good luck. It is a nice chip, just too steep a learning curve for me.

PICAXE is easy!

Carl,

I have been using the 430 family for several years. It is an outstanding product. OLIMEX has plenty of systems for development. A major advantage of 430 is that the code is compatible among the various devices.

The MSP430f1232 is a real bargain and the the MSP169 board provides the most flexibility.

What project are you considering?

I am working on an unmaned rover system. Howerer I am new to rc and programming. I am breaking the project down into "small" steps. The first is to get into programming and get the basics down.

Here is a path I traveled a few years ago:

For fun I tried to use the smallest device. I did get it to work but I'd start with a bigger part if I did it over. The MSP430f1232 has enough resources.

All I can say is WOW! You did a wonderful job! I will be looking over your thread and many of the other theads I have seen on here to get some ideas what to try and how to try them.
This project of mine is basicly starting out with an Internal Nav System, composed of GPS, compass, and accelerometers.

I buy them from Atto Pilot. It's a proven unit with a usable connector.

for best value you can get new sirf modules on ali for $8-$10. if you dont like that channel dealextreme sells them for $12-$18 shipped. a couple bucks more for boards that include cables. if you like to spend money or need a tax shelter sparkfun has the same units for about $70. im wondering how much atto charges since their autopilot setup runs close to a grand last time i checked.

if you have the MSP430-RF2500 dev kit from TI and are interested in quads, check this out. I'm currently building a quad based around this..
