Thermal Scout by Winded Shadow System tone variometer

Hi,

below a shor video of maiden flihgt with the Thermal Scout in tone output mode directly connected to the mic in of 5.8Ghz 200mv transmitter.
As you can see it works very well and it's a cheap gadget great to add to our fpv gliders..
The plane used is a Multiplex Easystar 2.

Variometer maiden flight (2 min 44 sec)

And there the vendor web site http://wingedshadow.com/thermalscout.html

I've been using one for a while on my BOT and you can't beat it for the price. It can be turned on/off from a radio switch.

As soon as I saw this video, I called them up and ordered one. I'm currently building a FPV EZ Glider so this is perfect.

But if you're doing FPV with an OSD which displays your altitude, why do you need this?

Because it is easier to use than the visual. With the visual you will focus on that spot of the OSD when thermaling when you should be flying the plane and watching for traffic. It frees up your eyes. All full sized sailplanes use analog varios with audio.

Also the GPS isn't as sensitive and won't react as quickly.

I also liked the look of the 'Last one Down' vario, it was just a bit out of my price range.

philthyy, post back once its installed let us know how you get on with it.

Vario and Mic on one audio channel

Can you connect this in parallel with a microphone so you can have the vario and on-board sound using one audio Chanel?

Cheers

I will definitely post up pics and vid once its installed and working. I'm really excited to try this! I'ver never thermalled a big glider before, much less FPV'ed one! (although I've been FPV'ing for 8 years now)

Yes you can. You need to supply the vario speaker such as one from an ear bud. You can then position it near the on-board mic and you willl hear both. That is how mine is set up.

Another option is to use a 100nF cap in series with the output from thermal scout, then connect it in parallell to the mic. That's how it's done on the SimpleOSD.
I connected my thermal scout like that and it works.
