Camera Recommendation for HD onboard video

I am not very impressed with the quality of the key-chain cameras. With that said, I am looking for a high quality camera to attach to my recently acquired AXN jet-floater (aka Cloud Fly). Originally, I was considering a GoPro ((This thread), but now I am more open minded for other high quality cameras. Specially if they come as a more aerodynamic design.

The plane:

What I want (or similar)

What I am trying to avoid:

PS: honestly, I would love to have the skills to take a GoPro up on a setup similar to the one above, but it is just not very realistic, I am new to all of this. Maybe one day, on a bigger plane like the Skywalker or something...

Any recommendations? (budget not to exceed US$600.00)

Around my neck of the woods these are what we are all starting to build. Long flight times and can even be set up with head tracking. Without camera it should come in somewhere around $500. I'm somewhat new to this too and maybe you already know about it but just thought I'd throw it out there.

I have a sony bloggie with the rotating lense. I really like it. 720p at 30 or 60 fps and 1080p at 30 fps.

Randall,

I have noticed some people using the bloggie with success, but I haven't seen any pictures taken from it.

Do you have anything that you can share?

Adidas, for that price I am still more inclined to get the Contour GPS

I chose the rd32ii over the contour because of tighter profile, lower weight and the fact that it is waterproof. It was $130. So far, I'm liking it and generally run it on 720p60fps.

At 2.5 ounces it DOES impact performance on my Radian though.

The #16 is a fine choice too, because it is light and takes a real nice 720 vid. These have very little impact on performance.

sony bloggie

It does 5mp shots. I just use mine for AV so I didn't mount a servo to it. I also take it with me on trips so I have kept it stock. I just did these this morning. The light isn't great right now because we have storms moving in. It still took some nice shots though. Although I haven't personally done it, the AV out is good enough to fly fpv with. I have a couple of friends that fly fpv and use it to fly with and record at the same time.

Here is a video I shot with it also. Youtube wouldn't let me post it as HD as I had allready reached my limit at that time. One of the things I really like about this camera is the HD quality without any fisheye issues.

Here is an HD video I shot with it. I had it on 720p@60fps, then dropped it to half speed. Makes the video come out really smooth compared to real time.
St Joseph, Missouri's Historic "Cracker House" aerial video. (6 min 40 sec)

Since these videos were taken I have redone my camera mount but unfotunately, I came down with really severe flu. I'm just now getting to the point of feeling like doing anything outside again. If any of you out there in the states get what you think is a sinus infection, get to a Dr quickly. This stuff lingers for a week, then appears to go away, only to return a couple of days later and it gets scary. I was coughing up blood early Monday morning. It's a mutated strain of the flu that the shot doesn't work against.

Hope you get well soon Randall!

This is the same model Bloggie, with a Dealextreme fisheye. I did this one at 720p 60fps. The Bloggie weighs 5oz, a heavy lift for the Cloudsfly.

Looking at a couple of videos from the 808 #16, dragging the images to be as large as possible on the computer monitor without any black frame, the resolution is very good..
Inflight and from bike handlebar..
Unless there's a need to get photo (still) images, the #16 is very good for videos.
And aerodynamically, it's of little consequence. even unfaired out in the breeze.
Any 12-14 megapixel camera would be superior for photos.

Those actually look pretty good, Paul. I guess the images I have seen prior to these ones were the ones from the "fake" HD #16.

Something to consider...

Any reliable sources?

.
Also have a #9, #11, and #14 from other sources.
The #11 is OK.
The #14.. why did anyone bother?

I really like my Contour GPS, here's a few videos with it on my DJI Flame Wheel hexacopter.

And here's one with my DriftHd 170

The Contour doesnt have a monitor screen, but you can look at the picture and change all the settings with your cell phone. And with the GPS tracking, it's pretty cool to see a Google map screen showing your route, speed, and altitude along with your video at the same time.
Also doesn't have the fish eye like the Drift.
Both weigh about exactly the same.
