Awesome, J!! Looking forward to watching you put this together!

For those interested (And quite possible you may know this already), but it was a pair of US Navy A-1s that were credited with the first air to air guns kill of the Vietnam war. And against a Mig-17 to boot!

Here is a link to a written acount of the event;

And a CGI exerpt from the History Channel's DogFights program. The link below is for part 1. As with most YouTube multi part videos, Part 2 and the completion of this story will be the first choice after Part 1 finishes:

Dogfights: Gun kills Of Vietnam Part 1 (9 min 51 sec)

Just thought I would share.

In that case Doc, just tell them you're going out for a cup of coffee and come over!

Cool video Rob!

Thought I would finish the vertical and then pop the rear top section off and hollow some meat out of it. Still shaping it.

Wow it is already looking good, one thing I love about J's threads is they keep moving! No waiting for YEARS literally for progress to be seen like some of the other build threads

John see you at SEFF

My son is getting married in Ga next month so I plan to go to SEFF. I hope to see you there. It is a long flight from WA. state but it will be worth it to see your planes in person.

Sounds great Hersch! We will be in the Sport Planes section( west end this year) and one of my tents is orange with a big white "T" on it. Hard to miss.

Sorry for this little hijack John, but i have to ask you a thing.

I see that you often use the lost foam method to make the moulds from foam plugs. Yesterday i've made my mould using your technique (wax over fiberglassed plug and then plaster of paris) , then I have extracted the plug using a simple method : airgun.

Have you ever tried ? it work perfectly and you can save the plug if something goes wrong with the mould.

You just have to blow air all around the plug, until it comes out. no need to make holes for the air, she find the road itself.

Here a pair of pictures, hoping that you get not too much angry for my intrusion on your thread.

Very nice Dave! I tried that many moons ago but didn't have any success with it and moved on without pursuing it any further. I do prep the mold better these days so it might work if I tried it.
On this A-1 cowl I plan to do a "proper" two piece mold in order to practice and improve my FG skills. Down the road I'll try the air extraction again. Thanks for sharing that, nice work.

Thanks guys, got to make this quick, supper's waiting.

Spent most of the day on the cowl mold layup. I cut parting planes from 1/8th ply( didn't have any Formica), gave them a skim coat of epoxy so I could wax them. Used a dowel to attach the end cap, it is glued in under pressure for a tight fit. Hot glue used on the side planes. Then filled any gap with clay, cleaned up the excess and gave it all three coats of wax and three coats of Partall mold release.
Before any glass, I used a mixture of epoxy and microfibers in the corners because the glass doesn't like those corners. Then laid up multiple layers of 3 oz and 5 oz glass. This needs to cure overnight.
I should have used a surface coat but didn't have the right filler and need to order some.
We'll see how it comes out in the morning.
