1/20 scale SPAD XIII

Hi everybody,

It has been a while since my last model here, time has come to start a new one...

Inspired by spikkkkkkkk's great build thread of his static 1/16 scale SPAD, I decided to finally start work on my own.

I know for sure I won't reach the same standards, but I 'll try to make a good job with it. It will be built for flying, so I have a good excuse during comparisons

My model will be built at 1/20th scale, which makes it rather small at 404 mm (16") wing span.

It is going to be 4-channel RC, if and when I finally figure out the ailerons operation. Have yet to study it... The RX system will be a Spektrum AR6400.

Projected weight is a very optimistic 40 grams.

This will be a slow build, plenty of other projects are running along, but I wanted to start it, so that I can switch between them, when I get fed up with one. So, please have patience I only hope it won't take the years it took my d.H.9.

I started work on the wings, since I also wanted to try something I had dismissed as a work method earlier - laser cut parts...

Having occasional access to a laser cutter, I drew up and cut the wing ribs and was quite amazed at the result, especially if you consider the small model size.

Accurate to the 0,1mm, even the alignment pin holes of 0,6mm diameter came out that... I was tempted to draw lightening holes, which would be quite time consuming with my traditional ply-template / sanding /file method.

All ribs are cut and stacked together for some light sanding and the first wing panel is on the building board.

Scale rib number makes this a rather slow job...

Bottom left wing almost finished. Needs planking and trailing edge completion, before going into details...

a couple of hours later...

main wing structure finished.

Turned out quite light too

Now to the other side...

As semi relevant info:-)
Scalloped trailing edges as found on 'some' WW1 designs were due to the covering fabric shrinking and pulling in the ...wire... used as the trailing edge.
Some modellers have tried a prebent very thin ali wire or tube as facsimile of it.

some progress done with the top wing...

The two panels were built separately but with the ailerons attached.

They will be separated later between the two sub-spars, after final shaping and sanding.

Plenty of minor rework needed for various fittings slots etc...

sanded the lengths of the spars and leading edge, so that they meet at the proper distance...

added a center rib and fixed the laminated curved trailing edge at the center section.

slowly sanded the ribs so they mate accurately to the circular trailing edge...

everything glued together...

added small lengths of carbon fibre strip at each spar, for local strengthening at the center.

"Finished", one piece wing...

Weight as is, 2,6 grams. I hope that plenty of that will be sanded away at the leading and trailing edges, I aim for 2,5 grams after planking.

Bottom wing panels pictured above were 0,9 grams each...

Yes, probably the total weight of these components is about the same or less than that of the dust on the wings of the usual models posted in this sub-forum

That is it for now...

Top wing sheeting added...

Ailerons were separated and the extra spars added.

Work has started on the various details, like the aileron horn cut-outs.

George - Phenomenal start, those wing panels look amazing for a 16" span! If this one turns out anything like your DH-9, it will be an award winner for sure!

A great start George It's hard to believe the size is so small - I imagine you COULD handcut all those ribs but modern methods are hard to ignore.....

Thanks J.B., Pat...

I do not know how it will turn out... I will try my best, but I do not want it to be a very long project. I aim for the same level as the d.H.9 but time will show if I find the patience.

Pat, you are right, this is how I used to do it...

I admit I was not that sold to laser cutting at first.
Now I can safely say that it is faster, of course, including the CAD time. But it is also (annoyingly) much more accurate. A 0.6mm pin locating hole was indeed 0,6mm

Anyway, there is still so much more to do, that a little laser cutting does not change the nature of scratch building.

Back to more "traditional" ways...

Fuselage sides done, added some rigging for extra stability. Next is to make the fuselage box and then formers, stringers, etc...

Slow progress indeed
