When the simulator port is connected the TX skips the binding process and turns off the transmitter. I was thinking that you could install a FrSky module sharing the same antenna by having a toggle switch that would hook up the FrSky module as if the simulator port was being used (it's just PPM). This way the radio would skip binding and turn off it's transmitter module allowing the FrSky module to use the same antenna. You'd just need to drill holes for a toggle switch and the FrSky bind button and LED.

What size allen wrench do I need to remove the screws in the Devo 8? I just got my 8D module but I didn't realize that it's not using phillips head screws.

Nice!

Does it automatically change the foreground color to white if the background is too dark, or did you do something with the fonts in the black scheme?

Would black Display background give the longest TX battery discharge time?

I think no.
It depends on the back illumination, not the contents...

I second that, the pixel rendering is not very power intensive, it's the back lighting that draws most of the power for the screen.

I've noticed that the batteries seem to last much longer when the TX is hooked up to a simulator.

Because it's not transmitting

They should have made it a reflective color screen with an optional backlight.

Looking at the ersky project may be helpful, as I believe they took the er9x source as the base, and now have it working on a replacement (ARM based) main-board.
So, how would you start a firmware. Base OS required?
As it will be built from the ground up, any UI suggestions?
At the moment it looks like the UI was built using the parts from an IDE.

This looks to be quite interesting, unfortunately nobody can do anything without the protocols.
Will the DSM2 stuff already done be enough?
