New Plane Project - X-45WL
Started working on airframe of my first design. Copy of X-45c silhouette and using the wing design of the Blucor Wing and reinforced with internal wooden rods so the nose shouldn't get crushed.
This delta wing is kind of a hybrid airfoil and step combined. About ready for the electronics which are on order. Won't take long to finish it but may have to wait for better weather to maiden, lots of wet snow on the ground. Used TLAR measurement system. Dimensions: chord: 47 cm wingspan: 66 cm width of wing: 1.5 cm cg: from 22.5 to 25.5 cm Have no idea if it will fly or what flight characteristics may be but sure is fun finding out. Updated 3/17: photos of motor mount I made of aluminum and showing XXD (Mystery motor I think) A1510 2200kv motor I plan to use with 5 inch prop. Motor mount is about 9 grams, a little heavier than wood but I got tired of breaking mounts. Updated 3/18: finished plane, ready to maiden. Craftsmanship is quite not existant, kind of kluged together. AUW is 240 grams. Portly but I like some weight as its pretty windy these days around here. Going to use 500 3s lipo. CG is around 26 cm from nose if I used the cg program correctly. Glides on my bed ok. I think it might be nice to add a piece to cover the electronics but don't know how to do it. Updated 3/21: have had 4 flights now and I can handle it very easily in no wind but in blustery conditions I lose control. Crashed it pretty severely on 3rd flight so replaced center section (took 5 minutes) and put motor mount on top. Hopefully in a severe crash it will just break the zip ties that hold the motor mount to the airframe. Updated 3/24: have changed motor mount to use foam and zip ties.
Updated 3/29: latest flight
Updated 4/1: put a vinyl cover over electronics. Yeah, looks like a bikini. Updated 4/12: have moved electrics to another project plane. Lessons learned: this plane flies like a little jet. I think I will build a new one later but just use a kf step on top to simplify construction and scale it up 25%. Then I think it will be easier to control, have a better glide and save the nose a few bruises. All in all it is a good design and I will continue working on it. Update 6/2: Will build this again with laminated 9mm EPP. I am done with foamboard. It is just too fragile for wings if you like to bash them. ImagesView all Images in thread
