3 DVRs comparison (FPV-Japan, Foxtech D1, Wireless DVR 5.8GHz)

I made a comparison test between 3 leading DVRs for FPV :
- FPV-Japan
- Foxtech D1 (link will be available within a week or so)
- Wireless DVR 5.8GHz , also avaliable at HK

My opinion :
FPV-Japan plays smoothly on its LCD (Wireless DVR is not smooth), FPV-Japan has the best LCD resolution (far better than the Wireles DVR) and the best picture quality. I wish it had 5.8 wireless capability.

Foxtech is quite good, but stuck sometimes with bad file error until you delete this file (e.g with computer)

I personally like the 5.8 capability because all my ground station equipment communicates at 5.8 (wireless antenna, goggles and GS - works great - no wires)

FPV-Japan costs 200$
Wireless DVR costs 100$
Foxtech D1 costs 70$ (new version coming up next week)

I would choose FPV-Japan if budget is not an issue (or the very similar Lawmate 500 lite which has the same hardware and quality)

There is not nearly enough high detail motion in your source clip to make a meaningful
comparison for FPV usage. TV shows and movies are filmed specifically to reduce or
eliminate all of the type of motion that is the norm for FPV. A typical TV show requires 2Mbit/s
or less to capture with MPEG4 compression. A typical low flying FPV vid will need at *minimum*
4-5Mbit/s and often more than that. Feed those DVRs some high motion/high detail clips and you'll
see *huge* differences in quality, especially with the Foxtech recorder. Also your source clip has huge black
bars all the way around the image so effectively only about half the visible area has any detail
at all cutting the bitrate requirements down by at least that much.

Ian, what do you recommend? My piano died and I'm tired of the Hi8 option.

I make no specific recommendations here. My point was simply that TV shows are
not suitable for evaluating recorders for FPV use, and that a high detail/high motion clip
will make it a lot more obvious which recorder is best suited, and which isn't.
One of the other big factors with FPV recordings is noise. There's always some
random noise in the video transmission, and it is uncompressible, so it eats
into your total available bitrate.

Yeah I recently burned (reverse polarity) my Piano recorder. Those things are impossible to find anymore. I wanted to try the Japan DVR but it was out of stock and it seemed they were not going to be available for awhile. I ended up getting the lawmate PV500 ECO. It is ok but not very convenient. I may checkout the Foxtech recorder when it is released.

Hi mate, Im looking at the foxtech D1 DVR http://www.foxtechfpv.com/mini-d1-qu...der-p-451.html

Only possible problem I can see, is PAL video is 720x576 res, whereas the D1 records 705x576. Did you test it with PAL video?
