Can I mount my retracts at an angle?

Great Planes P-51D 40 kit. To get the wheels up in the required area in front of the main spar I either have to: 1) put a slight bend in the legs. 2) Mount the retracts at an angle. I'm not sure I'll be able to bend the 3/16" wire accurately or at all. So I'm looking at solution #2. Is that OK or do the retracts have to be mounted exactly at 90 deg?

Where the landing gear goes and how its angled when retracted is not important. How it is positioned when it is extended is VERY important.

So I’m looking at page #20 of the build manual (online) for the GP P-51D 40. From the pics of the landing gear wire, there seems to be a slight dog-leg (bend) in the wire angling the gear towards the leading edge of the wing. However, I do not see any reference to the bend in the manual. This sorta makes me think that the bend *may* not be there at all. One way to get the proper angle is to make the adjustment at the gear wire coil.

- Remove the gear wire from the retract mechanism.
Now secure the short end of the wire (the end that goes into the retract mechanism) and uncoil the wire to the proper angle.

3/16”wire? Seems too large for this application. Even the 60-size models use 5/32” wire.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of uncoiling a little. I don't have a vice or very solid bench in our house but I'll give it a try anyway.

Yeah, after getting the 40 size Hobbico retracts and seeing what crap they are I kind of went overkill and got Robart 608 HD. These say 45-120 planes and I figured this plane squeaks in at the bottom range.

Since you don't have a vise, you could drill a 3/16" hole in a a length of 2X4 and use that as leverage.

I have some 1/4-scale kits that are in the 20+-pound range and they have 3/16" gear wire. I appreciate going strong, but maybe you should consider lighter gear if you haven't already bought them.

I've been test fitting and I think they'll work fine but given your advice and handling these beasts has made me re-think. I'll just save them for a larger build I'm doing next winter. I've ordered the next size smaller Robarts with 1/8" legs. Thanks.

Here's the smaller mechanical Robarts.
