New Product
New Hobbyzone Firebird Stratos 42" Twin-Prop Trainer!!Uh-OH! Hide your wallets!!! I just opened this month's Electric Flight magazine and inside the 1st page was a 2-page ad from HH with the new twin-propped, Hobbyzone "Firebird Stratos". This thing is a beginner's dream with those double props and glider-styling. First, it's got nice foam rubber nose. So if you hit something or nose-in, it flexes like a 1969 GTO bumper. Neat. Then it has a "break-away wing" that pops off (maybe magnets?) when it crashes, so it reduces the damage. Again... neat. Here's what it looks like.... sort've a cross between a Bixler and a Mosquito. With counter-rotating props... The RTF...interesting red transmitter 42" Perfect sized trainer: Handy finger indents for hand launching! Here's the info from HH: $129 & due in late March. http://www.hobbyzonerc.com/Products/...birdStratosRTF Interesting new plane -- It looks great! Mac |

Ugh.. Why a twin? That's twice as many motors and props for a beginner to damage. They can't possibly expect to make a lot of profit off replacements, but they HAVE still effectively locked new flyers into buying the factory props, and probably the motors as well since they're brushed.
It looks like a decent plane, but... |
Latest blog entry: Park pattern/pylon perfection!

Looks very good to me, have sorted supplier in UK. It has twin differential motors so they can be mixed with rudder for snappy turns. The motors are back on the wings to avoid the damage in frontal impacts that the nose mounted motors are so vulnerable to.The wings are held on with a magnet. I am expecting low damage on this one. Mix for elevator/ motor when you slow for landings. Mix for rudder/elevator so it doesn't fall out of the sky on turns, and it won't let you do too tight turns, so you avoid spiralling down, If you don't need all this help later on....it can just be switched off. Besides, and most important, my boys think two engines have more cred. The battery spec is for only 20C lipos, so plenty of cheapy replacements Motors are contra rotating to wipe out torque and are £16 UK a set, and props/spinners £5.50 UK . I do like their spares availability

I started with one of the original Firebirds a long time ago (seems like a long time ago...) and this thing is a great advancement!
Looks great and has great features! May even be fun and interesting to fly for an intermediate/sort of advanced pilot like myself...! I would buy this in a second as a new beginner... Hoping my brother/family may be interested so I can play with it too.... |
