Re-painting the Great Planes F-86

The F-86 is one of those airplanes with an almost limitless number of fantastic scale paint schemes. After successfully test flying my Great Planes F-86 I decided to repaint my model. This turned out to be a small but rewarding project using a few simple techniques. From start to finish the project took 4 evenings to complete. Here are a few of the techniques and products I used on my Minute Men scheme and can be applied to whatever scale paint job you would like to create.

First step decal removal

It would have been nice if the decals fell off with some warm water but it turns out these decals have a clear coat layer sealing them onto the foam. Great Planes went through the work to really protect these decals which is great for the majority of pilots who are happy with the stock paint scheme. Fortunately for us there is a fairly easy way to get these decals off. And the project begins....

I'm reserving one too!

But what the heck, kudos now! Looks great. Ouch to removing perfectly good decals on a brand new model, LOL! Hope you weighed before and after because you know we are going to ask......

You guys are too funny! I figured its better to repaint the model while it was new and pristine! I'll get the rest of the photos posted but the decal removal step was the major was all downhill from there.

Fast and getting faster!
Actually my dad and I are thinking the same thing, we are thinking maybe a navy paint scheme.

just have a couple more tweaks before getting the decals printed, then paint the nose and remove a couple of the factory decals

I found one!

I did the math and it looks like the Sabre will work out to 1:4.5 scale....of my other Sabre.

Hey Sean,
Yeah the camo on an F-86 is definitely unique! Did you make it to the WRAM show? I was keeping my fingers crossed that you might have your 104 on display. Maybe another time.

Hey pdawg!!!...Nice tutorial!!!...About the low tack tape---I've seen it in blue but never yellow like you used...Your yellow tape looks to be lower tack than the blue that I've been getting...Where did you get the yellow tape???...I bought some blue low tack tape @ Harbor Freight...It's VERY low tack as it will not stick to itself over night...I like it though to keep from peeling off paint from foam which is easy to do...I like alternatives so again, where did you get the yellow tape???
