Still no sign of my Slick being released from customs but I am making progress with the build despite not having the actual plane. I completed by re-wind of my Scorpion SII-3020/1110kv and the new kv at third time of asking came out just where I wanted at 750kv. It pulls 880W at 59A on a Xoar 14x7, I think this should be just about ideal for the Slick.

Test run on the motor highlighted a noisy bearing which must have been damaged when the last plane that the motor was installed in crashed, so I'll need to change the bearings out.

I get that out of my SunnySky 2820-950 with either a 13x6 or 12x7 on 4s.
My SunnySky 2820-800 kicks out 810w on a 14x7 on 4s.

They both weight the same at 140g (not including x-mount or adapter)

Gary, those are nice looking motors.

Can you really run the 2820-800 on 4s with 14x7 prop? Seems the amps would be very high? What amp rating can these motors take?

I've only ground tested the 14x7, but it was 52amps, and I've been flying the -950 around at 58a no problem. They don't publish a max amp rating, but I've found that these motors definitely need some cooling air over them when operating in the 50-60a range. The highest temps I've seen in-flight so far are 115F.

810W on 4s 14x7 seems OK, I wonder how much of that is heat loss versus actual prop watts?

thanks, yeah I'm very happy with the way the motor is performing considering this is the first motor I've ever hand wound. I had three goes to get the kv I wanted, first effort i messed up and got 415kv.. then I was very close and got 810kv.. third time lucky I got the exact 750kv I was looking for. Each time I've wound it I got better at it so taking three goes to get it right ins't such a bad thing. motor winding has a certain therapeutic quality to it anyway.

I could have just went with the 810kv but I think the 750 winding will be safer. The object of good winding is to cram as much copper in as possible and I must have done ok because the motor weight has gone up to 175g which must mean I got a bit more copper in there than the factory winding. Weight is not really an issue as it seems that the Slick needs a motor of at least 170g up front to balance.. I'd much rather have weight in the nose in the form of copper making the motor more powerful and efficient rather than lead.

PS.. The Slick is still in customs. According to Parcel Force 5 days in not unusual but they said if it's not out by Monday (which it looks like it wont be now) then they will start an investigation to see what's happened to it..... I have visions of a endless warehouse stacked to the ceiling, like the closing scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark

The stats on that motor show 13 x 6 being the largest suggested prop on 4s. It states 881 watts at 60 amps.

So the lower watts with higher amps on a 14 x 7 suggests to me that you are over propping. The other interesting thing is that you are ONLY getting 52 amps on 13 x 7. Based on the charts with a 13 x 6 at 50 amps, I would expect the 14" to push much more watts.

Gary, what lipo are you using and how new is it? Also, what is your elevation?

I'm at 2700ft MSL. And for the motor, it sounds like you're quoting the numbers for the -950 motor, which is exactly what I'm getting with the 13x6. I put the 14x7 on the -800 motor, and the manufacturer didn't provide any test data with that prop on 4s.

Good news on my Slick, it's been processed by customs and will be released for delivery on Monday, so should arrive with me on Tuesday. There has been duty charges made but not as much as I feared

Excellent news - you pre-pay ?? I guess the sales manifest with the declare down has assisted here.....

You win some you lose some with customs having said that had no issues with orders from HK - had more hassle with stuff from the US....

My time will come am sure....for china imports
