Los Banos Fun Day, April 7, 2012

Slope Flying on April 7, 2012.

It is time once again for a fun outing to Los Banos. This is a completely informal, fly any airplane you bring, get together on the slope.

Bring a range of airplanes from floaters, to scale planes, to whatever, arrive any time during the day, fly as much as you want, put away all the flying hardware, and go into town for dinner just after sunset.

Bring drinking water, food, sunscreen, sunglasses, chairs. . . . anything to be self sufficient for the day. Be sure to pay the day use fee for the park. I think it's $10.00, and you get it down in front of the dam, either self-serve or with the help of a ranger.

I will watch the weather forecast in the days prior to April 7. I will make the final decision whether I will go or not by noon Friday April 6, and I will post here.

The monthly aerotow is presently held on the first Saturday of the month, so aerotow enthusiasts will be there, too. Even with the prevalence of 2.4 Ghz radios, there are lots of 72 Mhz radios in use, so PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO FREQUENCY CONTROL.

"Any airplane". Does this include electric? I only have one plane up and working. (not that I will use the throttle on a slope, just concerned about admittance)

Any airplane?

Yes. Any airplane. There are no restrictions on airplane type at Los Banos for the April 7 fun fly. Safety, common sense, and courtesy are required. . . . that's all.

I guess that rules out missiles and turrets.

Here are the directions to get to the Los Banos Creek Reservoir slope flying site.

280 south
85 south
101 south
152 east (cross under I-5, and proceed for another approximately 2 miles)
right on Volta Road
left on Pioneer Road
right on Canyon Road

Canyon Road goes up the hill after crossing over I-5. Where the road levels out, there is a gate on the left. The road is dirt and gravel. The reservoir will be on your right. The flying site is about a half a mile from the gate, on the right.

I believe the Day Use Permit is $10 dollars. It can be purchased at the self-serve
facility down in front of the dam. Just as you get to where the road levels out, turn right and drive down to the area in front of the dam.

Is there an address for the Canyon Rd. entrance? If not, it's looks easy enough to get to without a GPS.

I have 2 planes to bring now! My Bird of Prey is done (pics on my page).

Poor forecast

I know it's only Wednesday, but the forecast for Saturday is looking pretty grim. The wind forecast is East at 4mph, and that doesn't work.

So, I will post here by noon Friday whether or not I will make the trip. If the forecast swings to the North, it might happen, if the wind forecast stays East, I will cancel the trip.

I was noticing the same thing for a couple days now. Sunday is showing W winds, but still very light. Keeping an eye on this for changes.
