Hi Marbleheads, this is John Z from Annapolis. My boat, 3347 was built from Graham Bantock's "Wafer" plans and I think it would like to come down from the wall to sail sometime. I have been sailing Classic Moths (11' dinghy) for the past 8 years and the American Moth class had similar development class problems as our Marblehead class; i.e. continuous ramping up technology and expense until people decided to bail out of the class. The way it was handled is similar to the proposal mentioned, the (American) Classic Moth class was divided into 3 divisions: vintage, generation 1 and generation 2. All three divisions show up at regattas and start together but the classes usually sift out on the first leg. Finishes are scored separately for each division. We have separate awards for each division and great parties afterwards because there are lots more boats there than if we only sailed gen 1 or vintage, etc. As sailors get older they usually drop back a division but still get to participate with all of their old and new friends. We have two sailors in their 80's who were national champions in the 50's and 60's and still get to sail with us.
I agree with someone earlier in this thread who said the more people racing, the more fun the sailing! |

That would probably be best served going to Someone in AMYA Region 6. http://www.theamya.org/regions/region6.php Reason being that Adrian Olson (GRP) of Freedom, C.A. has been a distributor of the Soling 50 in that area, and more than 3/4 of the Soling 50 class is registered there (73 boats in that area.. More surely exist but those are Active & registered.) If someone were to pick that boat up in the C.A. area they could actively sail it as a dual-rated Soling 50/M, and get the most benefit for what it is. There are a few Soling 50/M's in my club, but not an active soling 50 fleet, so they are just M's. The Soling 1M dominates, which of-course it's the #1 registered boat in AMYA... As far as the electronics are concerned, If they work they work! Sure, it would be in the best interest for someone to upgrade [To a Spektrum, of course ] But if you can put that boat in the water today, why not do so! Even though that soling 50 has been hanging around for quite some time, it looks to be in very, very good condition. And is a prime example of the boats that aready exist that can be dusted off and sailed with minimal rehab/building effort. |

You folks should join us July 20-22 at Redds Pond, Marblehead M.A. for the VM Nationals if you can.
I'm sure you are mostly talking about sailing Modern M's but if you have a VM, please come participate. If you don't have a VM, well, then come watch as a member of the M-Class. Our local club has enough boats ourselves to make the event worth watching. Here's just one of our local events from last season:

It was Honkin' that weekend. Say what you will about Redds. No doubt it's a difficult place to sail. The first to the weather mark at Redds pond is rarely determined by luck. It's a difficult pond in terms of winds and draft constraints. First to the mark is the most experienced skippers 90% of the time. Case & point is right in that video... The most experience skipper makes it to the weather mark first, even after having to tack away from someone in the middle of the pack, in a situation that he had rights and could have kept going. |

Non-the-less, if there are enough races the best skippers always rise above the rest. Best of luck keeping the old M's racing. Don |

The red boat (Standley) has starboard rights over the fleet from :40 on, and away he goes. If you watch where he came from, he came across the line in roughly 10th Place. |
