Making a few stands for various Ms seems like a good Midwinter project.
The stands are made from a scrap piece of Marine-grade plywood I had laying around.

I am coating them with West-System 207 special coating epoxy. Gives it a varnished look, but with the tough-as-nails coating of epoxy.
They'll look like the Viper's cradle when done.

What's everyone else working on?

I'll sand some paint off the bottom of the bulb and let you know what I find.

Well, I had the unfortunate circumstance of making friends with an Auto-Body shop when someone kept their car moving forward, while mine was most certainly stopped.

Anyways, we got to talking, and they were open to working on some of my model boat paint projects.
As one of my winter projects I decided to sand & paint my Kisutch, as well as fair-out the pretty beat up bulb.

So, after some sanding, here is what the Sterne Kisutch bulb looks like.
Two-Part lead casting, with a pin running vertically into the keel.

Hmm. Sanding Lead..... Hmmm Tough job..

One stand complete.

That was easy.
I'ts amazing how much you can accomplish on your hobbies by just doing an hour a day and still putting the time into more important things.

Thanks Fizzzy;
Sadly,
In the U.S. There are no suppliers making ballasts for any classes, at-least that I am aware of.
Don Ginther was the Go-To
The problem was that customers were not willing to pay the price asked by those manufacturing them. And, as we all know, what's the sense of working if it's not beneficial. That's backwards.
People would rather spend their money on low-quality goods.

Worldwide - Bantock obviously sells them. His quality is second to none. and the price isn't obscene all things considered to have it imported. It's a pre-cast lead.
What will it cost you to smelt some old tire weights in the comfort of your own home.

Yeah. I'll buy a lead, thanks.

Where are all the other Ms in the world getting their leads? The German Walickis, those that came into the thread showing their Frank Russel designs.
Where does one get a M-Lead anywhere?

It's very, very light, but I have a Ballast I'd be happy to sell you cheap. I forget the exact weight, but it's something like just over 5lbs. It would only be good on a really, really light boat lilke a Sterne Monocat, or Johnson Orco Skinny. I don't forsee ever using it.

unfortunatly sending an 8lb lead half way round the world would not be cheap it's not rocket science to cast your own!
When I used to do scuba diving I cast my own weights for my weight belt anyway here's how it's done.

FYI, most tire shops won't give or sell you old lead weights anymore. When I went around looking, they either said "It's an environmental issue, and that they have disposal guidelines they have to follow." or "It's company policy that we can't give or sell our lead, corporate doesn't want people making bullets from them." (yep, that last one I got from several large tire chains).

That's subjective to the individual's perspective, but one things for sure:

If No-one was building bulbs, there wouldn't be any bulbs! That's simple math.

Some want to build, some don't, it's all the individuals perspective.
For me, and that's only speaking for myself... I look at Step-1 of that "how to build a bulb tutorial" and read Design your bulb with a CAD Program.
Ok, fair enough, I'll order a finished bulb from overseas when I'm ready, and let my wallet take the hit. I've done it before, and it wasn't horrendous.

You don't have to build. You don't have to buy... what makes the most sense for you?

Don't forget.
Anything that is an "Environmental" issue is, usually, a Human-health issue as well, just publicised under the Earth fad.
If it's bad for the earth, it's probably bad for you too,

I'm no hippie, but I do care what's ingested in my body. Lead is not on my list of flavors.
Some people will do it, with the proper profesionalisim it respects, being a carcinogen.

Thanks for your replies re ballast question. I kinda thought that might be the case right now here in USA. Breakwater thanks for the offer but it might be a little light.

Certainly.

This brings up a good point, as I mentioned:
Who's producing Marblehead Ballasts worldwide besides Bantock?

I think I recall while surfin around maybe ultralite in New Zealand had a M bulb. Also Radio Sailing Shop in Australia. Sails etc in England offers quality bulbs and I am sure David Creed offers a nice M bulb too.
