Just a couple Ms on the pond.

Who would ever want to sail a boat in a big-active fleet with lots of other interested parties, and in an established class with thousands of boats already in existance.

Sounds awful.

Here is a list of boats that are being manufactured
Today, all within the USA and all that qualify, or can qualify with the proper sails in the Marblehead 50/800 class.

None of these boats can compete with a Skapel, nor do they have to.
If you want to match-race just sail similar vintage 50/800s.

These boats are all Ms in one form or another.

Mystery Marblehead?


Hello all,

I'm seeking info on this M boat rescued from an estate sale in upstate NY.
She had a broken mast and old sails, gaping hole in the deck.
I replaced the winch, sails, mast and rigging but attached the sails before I knew what I was doing. It has a fiberglass hull and deck with unusual (I think) rigging on aft deck.
I plan to put it right and get the correct rigging.

Does anyone know more about it from the photos?

The is no such thing as "Wrong" in the Marblehead class.

You can do anything you want within certain confines.
If these sails measure 800 square inches or less... You actually have the RIGHT sails.

If it measures 50" long, (Which I'm sure it does) it's a Marblehead. That's all you need to know.. Nothing else matters.
If the lead of the keel is aft of the leading edge of the fin (which it looks like it is) it would be considered to be grouped with the "High-Flyer" Group of the Marblehead Class.

The Broken Mast & Hole in the deck sound like a problem, but old sails are no reason to replace them. Torn/Ripped/Holed, well, that's different.

Where is the old winch? Does it work? If it does, why not use it? Old... bah, if it 'aint broke, don't fix it. In terms of the unusual rigging....I have never seen a Marblehead class boat that is "USUAL"...

Breakwater,
Sails were ripped. I just bought a "used" pair from Windjammin Sails and are on their way. They will serve as a backup to the Carr Sails already in place.
It didn't have a sail winch. I put a drum type on it and it works great.

Any ideas as to what the aft rigging arrangement in the photo is called?

No problem at all.
The aft rigging isn't called anything special that I'm aware of... i'ts just a sheeting system. And if it works... Well, it works.

Obviously when the line retracts into the stern, it sheets the boat in. Your mainsheet runs off of the forward pulley, and to adjust it's position at close-hauled, you adjust the bowsie on starboard.

The Jib runs off of the aft block, and to adjust it's slot position you adjust the bowsie on Port.

Overly complicated?!?!?!?

I think it was done for mechanical advantage to compensate for a weak servo, or not enough throw.

Stop, think, and follow KISS when-ever possible. With older stuff, they had to be creative. Now, maybe not so much.

I have sailed it about 5 times. Everything works fine, but will need more fine tuning.

I also plan to join the local club. I may be able to store it in the clubhouse, being tough for me to transport and set-up.
I sail at Spreckles Pond in Golden Gate Park adjacent to the SF Model Yacht Club www.sfmyc.org

I was mistaken about my sails being "wrong". They are the proper size for the "M" Class and work quite well. What I need to work on is the rigging and how to get the most out of the Carr sails currently on the boat. I will consult club members soon.

That's great to hear about another Marblehead class with the right equipment! and glad to hear you are going to sail it in SF! Good luck with the boat.. that was an easy refurb!

Thanks for the post. The Marblehead RC was my first boat I sailed many years ago in Miami. Rich Silverman loaned me his Dad's boat and I was hooked (1998?) and bought the Scalpel I still own today.
Thanks to Fred Rocha for putting on a great one day regatta and a special 'Thanks' to seeing old friends that support the MH Class. To Dick Carver and John C for pushing the limits. Everyone won today!
