61g "Samurai" ST 1K carbon fabric 100cm wide - $50/foot

I ordered a roll of "Samurai" 1K spread-tow carbon fiber fabric from Germany, and purchased more than I need to experiment with myself. I'm happy to sell the extra by the foot for approximately what I paid for it once you factor in foreign exchange fees, shipping and (surprise!) tariffs. That works out to $50/linear foot of a 100cm roll (so $50 for a little more than 3 square feet of fabric). This is much, much less than you'll pay for any comparable weight fabric currently available in the US. Having said that, I'm not aware that there is any comparable weight fabric available in the US. This stuff is made from 1K tows that have been really spread out. Stated weight is 61g/m^2, or about 1.8oz/yd^2. I weighed some myself and (after factoring out the taped edges) got 62g/m^2, so the weight is quite accurate. The fabric is not bound, but is very, very stable because the tows have been spread so wide and are woven tightly. It still conforms to curves quite nicely, particularly if laid on the bias.

I could probably be convinced to sell this in bias-cut strips also if enough people are interested. A 1-foot wide piece of bias-cut fabric, which is going to have dimensions of 12" x 55.6" (with the ends angled at 45 degrees), will be $70 (same price per square foot as the non-bias fabric). Note that this is different than the way bias fabric is often sold in the US, where the number of square feet you get (approximately) per purchased "foot" is maintained by reducing the width of the bias strip to about 8.25". I think it's better to maintain a 12" bias strip width since you can then do an entire 60" DLG D-Box with a single 1-foot purchase (assuming you want your D-Box on the bias of course...), with plenty left over for full spread-tow tails or whatever else you'd like to create. See attached diagram for fabric layout and dimensions.

There are a number of builders in the handlaunch/DLG forums who have been using this fabric with very positive results. Search on "samurai" in that forum if you'd like to read about their experiences with it.

I've included a few pictures of a piece of the fabric. It's a little hard to photograph because it's so shiny. Note that I took the photos with the fabric sitting on top of a white piece of paper to highlight the almost nonexistent spaces between the tows.

As stated above, the price is $50/foot of a 100cm width roll (12" x 39.3") or $70/foot for bias cut (12" x 55.6" with 45-degree ends). One foot of bias-cut is enough to do a D-Box for an entire 60" DLG wing, and you'll have enough left over to make full carbon tail surfaces, peg reinforcements, etc. $5 flat shipping for quantities under 3 feet, $10 flat for 3 feet or more, and if you order 3 feet (or any 3-foot increment) I'll round it up to a full meter (~3.4 free inches!). I'll ship it in a heavy duty cardboard tube and the cut ends of the fabric will be taped. I don't have too much of this stuff to sell and when it's gone, it's gone. PM me if interested and let me know if you have any questions. Paypal preferred, as "gift" unless you really think you need the "protection" of a commercial transaction and like giving Paypal money. Thanks very much and enjoy this fabric, it's very cool stuff!

....so 1 sq Meter would be $150 plus $10 shipping (the roll is 1m wide?)

Hi Chip. DLGJunkyard is correct in post #5. However, I've updated my original posting to note that I'll "round up" to 1m for anyone who orders 3 feet (or increments of 3 feet). ~3.4 bonus inches for free! (That's what she said...) ;-)

So in summary, yes you are correct: 1 sq meter is $160 shipped. Also FYI I've added a bias-cut option to the original posting if you're interested.

Thanks,

-John
