Thanks for the thread. I am going to build your axom fuselage to fix my wrecked bixler. I also love the simpson strap motor mount idea. I was wondering what to do with the electrical parts now I know. I love the whole KISS (keep it simple stupid) concept of the wing and the design. Really got my gears turning.

Maiden of my Boxler...aka Axon
Thanks again Ed for all of the info. Going to be a great plane post repairs...
Will also have to cut a slot out for the prop as it would hit the fuselage a little during flight (intermittently). Also, think I am going to put two batteries in parallel up front to get a perfect COG... Here it is

Black Poster Board with White Foam Core
Wish I could tell you more, but from the Internet, it appears R.L. Adams is making the same poster board sold under the sticker name of Readi-Board. If the paper skins come off pretty easy once they get wet and dry out again, I would bet the foam core is the same. The foam will be soft, easy to damage and very lightweight. It is also easy to cold roll, cut (if using a very sharp razor/knife), and glue with an assortment of options. Of course the common re-skinning option will likely be packing tape, colored or clear. I have such a hard time getting the $ Tree store manager here to keep the foam board on hand it is near impossible for me to purchase and test what your GF found.

Ed,
I just wanted to send a quick note to thank you for your work on this post. I had been following Mikey RC and RCPowers for this type of construction and began building some of their designs. Some are pretty good but still seemed "unfinished or temporary". the techniques you demo'd here are great! Just what I've been looking for. I am in Glendale, AZ and it was a kick to see a local expert. BTW, do you have a good local source for the colored packing tape or do you prefer buying online? I am anxious to get started on these designs. I had a couple left over sheets of board tucked away and didn't know which way to go with them. Well, you fixed that. I'll get some practice on the techniques with the simpler models and then I need to build that powered glider with the tapered fuse! Ed, thanks again for sharing your experience. Huge benefit to the flying few. I'll be following up later. Tom |

I get colored packing tape from TapeBrothers.com. http://www.tapebrothers.com/Colored-...apes-s/218.htm All I've seen in stores (recently: Ace Hardware, Wal-Mart) is overpriced but pretty cool looking psychedelic pattern packing tape, like $5 per 30yds. Indeed, I'd say build a Noob Tube, shelve it, then build and fly an Axon. I'll be doing a formal build video on the motorglider within the next couple of weeks. Cheers, Ed |

Ed The prices from the link seem good and the shipping is really reasonable. Do you have any problems with the tape sticking to the foam? Ray |

No problem sticking to papered foam. In fact it sticks rather permanently. The tape sticks OK to bare foam, flat and positive contours only, not recesses. By my technique I leave paper on all the exterior surfaces, therefore all the pre-applied tape is on papered surfaces facing exterior. If you needed to tape bare foam I would say it's OK but with some reservations. Taping the paper is rock solid, never coming off.

An alliterative for tape ... Shurtape HP-200C Production-Grade Colored Packaging Tape through Amazon. And if you're a Prime member, it qualifies for free two day shipping.
Right now, it is going for $7.67 for 2"x110yds. I've used this stuff since seeing Ed's taping technique and have had good success with it. |

so i lost my second noob tube when a guy almost hit mea t the field. the whole front and motor was a loss. Now i have already built my next tube fuselage.
Can i .. should I cut the rear off the old plane and just hot glue 5" on to the end using some internal slats and some external tape. I know the cg will change but now i can move the wing back a bit. will it be strong enough?heres some pics |
