GAAM 1:1 scale Spad XIII

Howdy Ladies and Gents,

Since we can't sit on our hands, The next project is in the wings!
we're starting this project while the Pup is being finished up.
We've acquired a 230 HP Continental O-470-R and are working on the fuselage Here are some photos

Kudos to the person who can determine the Pilot and unit from the Photos...

The SPAD fighters are interesting concerning their 'toughness' especially in a dive. Later, years after the Great War, it was determined the reason they didn't break up like so many other aircraft of the era was that the system of levers to the ailerons acted like counterweights and kept the ailerons from fluttering with secondary drastic consequences.

It's underway. Paul Sr. and Paul Jr. (Dougherty not Teutel LOL) set up the jig table today for the SPAD fuselage. They laid out new sheet rock on the table top. This allows them to have a clean white surface to mark the stations and dimensions on and then is a perfect surface to weld on. they did get the stations marked out and a few of the cross members tack welded in. Mike Cilurso started this fuselage a few years ago and then put it aside, the only difference we are making is the engine installation. He was setting it up for a 4 cyl. Lycoming, we are using a 6 cyl. Continental O-470-R. The front end will get changed around a little for the bigger engine. The fuselage will have the same length nose as the Hisso powered originals. The big change of course is the steel fuselage, we are working with the figures off of the Replicraft drawings and original drawings to create the steel fuselage layout. Outwardly the aircraft will look the same as the wood original.

The progress will be slow for a while with the Pup project in the final stages and the Studebaker Touring Car taking up a lot of time. Both of those should be done by spring and will allow all the shop resourses directed to the SPAD project.

More soon,
