Can I use a 9.6v pack in my stock Slow stick?
I have a basically stock ss- 300 motor, 11x8 prop, 4RN GWS reciever, and a 20A Great Planes ESC. My question is I have a 900mah 9.6 Nimh from a firebird xl and I would like to use it in place of the 740mah 7.2 Nicad. I know it will shorten the life of my motor, but how much quicker will I burn it out? Also will it be too much for the receiver and last how much performance increase will I see?

Nick:
I flew my SS with 8 cell Kan 950 packs for probably 40-50 flights before the brushes flat wore-out and fried the motor. I was also using a great planes speed control (micro -10 size). I ended up shorting out the motor circuit when the brushes went out and burned up the speed control too! The plane flys great on 8 cell but I have read numerous accounts of the same motor life I got out of mine. If you can afford to by a new moter every few months then run her on 8 cells, she flys really great! |

Nick-- go to this website and buy the 350 motor from GWS:
http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/370...0c_2628746.htm It will fit in your stock 300-size gear box, and it will last a lot longer with the eight-cell batt. And by the way, eight cells really are a hoot! |

I flew my SS on 7 cells for a couple of days, then switched to 8 cells (AA nimh RX pack). I got about 30 minutes before the motor gave up the ghost. I had a ton more fun running the stock motor on a 2S lipo pack and a 12/6 prop (Etec 1200s are great). I know everyone says the same thing about switching to lipos, but when you do you'll see why
with the price drop on Etecs lately, its hard to resist! |

Most of the time i flew a 6 cell 600 AEKR nicad, but that pack got old and a cell failed. Shame that! It was a nice battery pack.
Keep in mind that i don't use a speed 300, they burn out to fast for me. My slow stick now uses a speed 400 (6 volt) with a 3:1 gear box and a 10x8 or 11x4.7 prop. On the 6 cell KR nicad, it would *JUST* bairly hold a hover, last night a built an 8 cell 600 AE nicad and it worked quite nicely. With your speed 300, you will get good power, but your motor wil probly not last long. It might be a good idea to look into the new EPS 350, witch will last longer on a higher cell count. Hope this helps! Thomas |

My eight year old son learned to fly his SS with an eight cell 720mah pack and has even flown it on a nine cell pack without any problems "burning out" the motor after 1-1/2 years and over 100 flights. The SS motor will handle 9.6v easily without problems unless you start running something like the Kan 950 pack that the Combat dentist mentioned above. They can deliver more amps and therefore they will make the motor get hotter and wear out the brushes alot faster!

We are running a GWS 12X6 RS prop.

I use a 9.6V 1600 mah pack on my SS. I got the pack very cheap from radio shack. On a calm day, the flight time is about 27 min at 60 % throttle. The motor will last longer if you are not addicted to full throttle. You use only full power on take off; then, you decrease the throttle once you get enough altitude. In that case, the 9.6V pack doesn't hurt your speed 300 motor.

From my experience with the SS, Zero and Corsair I think that the 350 is putting out considerably more power than the 300. I havn't tried the 350 on my sons SS but after flying my Corsair with the stock 350 I think it would be a considerable improvement over the 300.
