Hooking a gyro up to a serial port or similar?
Hey guys, I'm looking for info on getting gyro information directly from one of the new piezo gyros rather than using it as is.
Having built several R/C models I'm interested in trying a new challenge by building a model that will fly itself. I want to use a couple of BASIC STAMP's and a small GPS to build a model that will fly itself along a designated course.
I've got the GPS end covered since I've written my own moving map for use in flying my full-size plane and understand what is needed there. What I'm looking for is a way to get roll/yaw information. It looks like a piezo gyro will get what I need, but I have no idea how to interface with it. Anyone have any ideas? I'd appreciate any info you can offer.
GPS and autopilot
Check out this site. Not cheap, but looks fun.
Since 1995, MicroPilot has been designing miniature autopilots using low cost COTS GPS receivers and mems rate sensors. From the start, MicroPilot autopilots have been compact and lightweight. Even our first autopilot fit - just barely - into a .40 sized RC trainer. Since that time, MicroPilot autopilots have flown a wide range of UAVs - from two pound MAVs/backpack UAVs to high speed turbine powered drones.
MicroPilot sells Autopilots worldwide to academic, military, and private research institutions as well as to OEM UAV manufacturers and end users. MicroPilot also provides integration support and contract engineering for autopilot installations.
