MSRx Red X'd
Well my MSRx showed up yesterday. I first tried flying it in the office...terrible idea. After bouncing it off of the cabinet where our TV sits, a couple of different desks, and the wall (and subsequently into the trash) I decided to take a different approach. The wind seemed a little high so I just set the little bird aside for a minute...then later as I went out to have a smoke I noticed that it was quite calm outside.
So I decided to take the risk...I reset the trim and moved outside to fly. It was definitely a handful and took more inputs than I am used to...but then again I'm a novice, so that's to be expected. I was able to just fly around a bit and achieve a reasonable hover...not so much a hover but able to keep the nose pointed in one direction while staying within a three by three foot square. It's a start. Anyways...one thing I've noticed about Afghanistan is that darkness can descend quite rapidly. So my Platoon Sergeant came by and I was eager to show it off to him since all he had seen of it was me running it into walls and scaring people with my own inexperience while getting too close to their exposed faces. So we stepped outside and I flew a bit...it was starting to get dark and he commented on how fast it was...then had to go back down to his office. So here I was...with the light fading quickly and probably half or so of the battery left. I wasn't about to just stop so I decided to try to do some take offs with nothing but throttle input and try to trim her up a little. Well...I learned a valuable lesson. Trimming is great and all but don't take your eyes off the bird. I was inputting and when I looked up it was probably 75 or 100 feet away...right between a bunker and our AH-64 hangar. I should have just cut power and run and gotten it...but instead I figured I'd fly it back over to me. Well I misjudged the direction the nose was pointing and I guess I was a little too aggressive with it, so directly into the side of the hangar it went. Luckily it is really just a big tent so it bounced right off...onto the concrete. Ouch. I ran over to it and it looked fine...until I saw that the plastic piece that is where the tail rotor mounts had snapped where it starts to turn up. That sucks. So I got online and ordered another one (who knows how long that will take to get here) and set about performing repairs. I used some super glue to reattach the tail...then this morning I got some epoxy (DoubleBubble) to line the crack...and once that sets I'm going to put a little strip of some aluminum tape around it. Maybe it will work...though I'm not holding my breath as to it flying as well as before it broke. I don't expect that...just well enough to hold me over until the new tail assembly gets here. Oh yes...flying it and doing even more reading made me realize that I'd probably really like a 120sr...so that might be a possibility in the future. I can't justify it now...but maybe in a couple of months. |

It worked...I'm surprised
So my epoxy set and I put a little strip of aluminum tape around it (mainly so it won't look quite as terrible...still looks terrible, just not quite as terrible). It's raining so I can't take it outside and give it a thorough testing...but I took it up in my office and it actually works just fine. Surprisingly it seems a little more stable than before...or maybe that's just me being more careful because I broke it once already. I'm not sure about that.
